Falcons Second At Bearcat Invitational; Drew Preston Tied For Individual Lead
October 13, 2009 | Men's Golf
DAY ONE INDIVIDUAL RESULTS, BY TEAM
After day one of the 2009 Bearcat Invitational, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team finds itself in a position that has become very familiar over the course of the 2009-10 season. The Falcons are at the top of both the team and individual leaderboards and are in strong contention to win their third team and individual titles in just their fourth tournament of the season.
Playing at the par-72, 7,103-yard Traditions Golf Course in Hebron, Kentucky, the Orange and Brown fought their way to a two-round score of 591 (296-295) and a second-place finish after the tournament's first day. The Falcons were aided by a tournament-leading score of five-under-par on the course's four par-5 holes. Bowling Green trails tournament leader Ball State by just two strokes; the Cardinals managed a second-round 293 for the difference.
Miami University, who shot a tournament-best round of 287 on the second 18 holes, is in third place. Their score of 592 is just three off the lead and one behind Bowling Green.
Eastern Kentucky (598) and Western Kentucky (600) round out the top five. Host school Cincinnati is tied for sixth place with Austin Peay State in the 17-team field. Both managed a 601 for the day.
Individually, sophomore Drew Preston earned birdies or pars on 31 of his 36 holes to card a one-over-par 143 (74-69). He is tied for the tournament lead with Miami's Nathan Sutherland. Sutherland shot identical rounds of 74 and 69. A Preston victory would be his second of the season. Two golfers stand two shots behind the co-leaders at one-over-par (145), while there is a three-way tie for fifth place at 146, three shots behind the co-leaders.
Fellow sophomore Parker Hewit is also in the top ten. His three-over-par 147 (72-75) is part of a four-way tie for 8th place; Hewit sits just four shots off the lead. Senior Matt Schneider is tied for 25th place with a score of 150 (76-74). At just seven shots behind the co-leaders, he is also in contention.
Sophomore Wes Gates carded a 153 (74-79), while senior John Powers scored a 154 (77-77) for the Falcons. Both are in the top 50 of a 90-player field.
One side highlight of the tournament's first day was a hole-in-one on the par-three 5th hole by Chris Dougill of Austin Peay.
The tournament will resume with a final round of 18 holes on Tuesday, October 13. The round will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00am. A full recap and final tournament statistics will be posted shortly after completion of play.
