The Bowling Green State University men's golf team is in sixth place after the first round of the 36-hole Dayton Flyer Invitational, but the Falcons are in position to challenge in the final round for the team's third top-five finish of the young 2009-10 season.
Bowling Green secured an 18-hole total of 309 at the par-71, 7,055-yard NCR Country Club's South Course in Kettering, Ohio on Monday. They are currently tied with Ohio University; both teams are just four shots behind the two teams currently tied for fourth place. Wright State and MAC foe Ball State finished the day at 305.
The University of Toledo leads the pack after day one with a total of 298. Five shots behind, in second place, is Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne. IPFW carded a 303 for the day. Evansville follows in third at 304.
Butler is one shot behind the Falcons and sit in eighth place. Malone University and Youngstown State round out the top ten with a score of 312. The University of Dayton, host of the event, is 13th after day one with a score of 320.
Individually, the Orange and Brown place three competitors in the top 25 of this 99 player field.
Sophomore Drew Preston again leads the charge for the Falcons. His first-round 76 (39-37) is tied for 16th place. To capture his second victory of the season, he will have to overcome a seven-shot deficit to tournament leader Michael Sainz (69) of Evansville. A top five finish is closer to Preston's reach; he is only three shots behind a group of five players tied for fourth.
Senior Matt Schneider (39-38) and freshman Wes Gates (38-39) both carded rounds of 77 and are tied for 23rd place. Both sit just four shots outside of the previously mentioned group of golfers tied for fourth.
Also included in the top half of the field is sophomore Parker Hewit. Hewit's round of 79 is tied for 43rd place. Meanwhile, senior John Powers sits just one shot behind Hewit; his score of 80 (41-39) is tied for 55th.
The Falcons will resume action tomorrow, October 20th, for the second and final round of the 36-hole tournament. A full recap and final statistics will be available shortly after the completion of play.
