With the victory, the Chippewas improve to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in MAC play, while the Falcons drop to 3-5 and 2-2, respectively.
Central had a narrow margin in total offense, with 406 yards to the Falcons' 363. BG had 343 yards passing to the Chippewas' 147 on the day. But, the visitors had 259 rushing yards, while holding the Falcons to just 20 yards on the ground.
The Falcon defense held the nation's 15th-ranked offense (in terms of points per game) to 10 points under its average. But, the Chippewas were a perfect 3-for-3 in red-zone offense, while the Falcons scored on only one of five trips inside the red zone.
CMU quarterback Dan LeFevour threw for 147 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while rushing for 128 yards on the day. LeFevour led all players in carries (22) and yards on the ground.
Central never trailed, taking a 14-10 lead into the half and scoring the only 10 points of the second half. CMU got on the board less than four minutes into the game, when Antonio Brown scored on a four-yard run.
The Falcons answered early in the second quarter, scoring on a four-play, 78-yard drive that took only 75 seconds. Tyler Sheehan hooked up with Freddie Barnes on back-to-back plays that covered the last 75 yards of that drive.
First, Sheehan found Barnes streaking down the left side of the field for a 51-yard gain. Then, on the very next play, the senior QB found the senior WR in the right front corner of the end zone. Matt Norsic's point-after try tied the game at 7-7 with 11:26 left in the half.
The Chippewas answered quickly, as LeFevour guided CMU on a five-play, 65-yard drive in just over two minutes. The drive culminated with a 29-yard pass to Brown with 9:16 left before halftime. Andrew Aguila's PAT restored the visitors' seven-point lead.
The Falcons got three points back as Norsic hit a career-long 40-yard field goal with just 5.5 seconds left in the half.
Central took the second-half kickoff and drove right down the field, but the Falcon defense kept the Chippewa out of the end zone. CMU got as far as the BGSU 12-yard line, but BG's Eugene Fells sacked LeFevour for a loss of nine yards on a third-down play, and Central was forced to settle for an Aguila field goal.
On the next drive, the Falcons took the ball all the way down to the CMU nine-yard line, but a fumble gave the ball back to the Chippewas. It marked the second time in the game that BG turned the ball over in the red zone.
Central, going with the wind in the fourth quarter, took advantage of an exchange of punts, getting the ball at the Falcons' 35-yard line. LeFevour had rushes of 12 and 24 yards on that drive, then hit Bryan Anderson for a nine-yard touchdown strike with 10:02 left in the game. Aguila's PAT gave CMU a two-TD lead.
After another exchange of punts, the Falcons put together a 62-yard drive, getting inside the CMU 20-yard line. Sheehan hit Barnes for a pair of double-digit yardage plays on that drive, and also completed a 14-yard pass to Chris Bullock. But, with the Falcons at the Central 18, the Chippewas' defense forced four-straight incompletions, the last coming with 2:56 left. Central took over on downs and ran out the clock.
Sheehan threw for 341 yards on the day, completing 35 passes in 55 attempts. Barnes, as usual, had a double-digit receiving total, with 14 catches for 172 yards on the day. Jimmy Scheidler and Adrian Hodges had five catches apiece.
Brown led the Chippewa receivers with five catches and 68 yards, and also ran for 42 yards on just six carries. Carl Volny had 74 rushing yards for the visitors.
The Falcons had 24 first downs to the Chippewas' 21, and BG held a slim 30:43 to 29:17 advantage in time of possession.
Two players reached milestones in the game, as LeFevour became the first MAC player to complete 1,000 career passes. He is believed to be only the 11th player in NCAA FBS history with 1,000 completions.
On the BG side, Barnes became the Falcons' career receptions leader, passing Charles Sharon (see the notes at the bottom of the page).
The game marked BGSU's final Saturday contest of the regular season. The Falcons' next game will be on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Buffalo. After a Nov. 12 game at Miami, BGSU will return home for back-to-back Friday games, vs. Akron (Nov. 20) and Toledo (Nov. 27), to end the regular season.
