FINAL RESULTS
This week, the men's golf team at Bowling Green State University was not able to capture its third consecutive individual or team championship to start the 2009-10 season. However, at the 2009 Xavier Invitational, the Falcons still found success. The Orange and Brown placed seventh in a very strong field of 12 teams, while three of their five participants finished in the top 25.
As a team, Bowling Green carded a three-round total of 874 (296-286-292). Their mark of ten-over-par was three shots better than Dayton and Austin Peay State, who tied for eighth place. Ohio University was four shots behind the Falcons, while Marshall and Princeton rounded out the field. BGSU's finish is four places better than their finish at Xavier in 2008.
This year's tournament champion was MAC rival Akron. The Zips posted a 15-under-par 849 for the tourney. Eastern Kentucky placed second, seven shots behind Akron. Marquette carded a six-under-par 858 for third place, while tournament host Xavier (862) was two-under-par. Ball State (863) rounded out the top five.
Falcon senior Matt Schneider, along with sophomore Drew Preston, led the five-player contingent from Bowling Green. Both Schneider and Preston scored a 216 for the tournament. Schneider's score included a three-under-par 69 in the second round and a two-under-par 70 in the third round. Preston was very consistent -- he shot an even-par 72 in all three rounds of the tournament.
Sophomore Parker Hewit finished in a tie for 24th place for the second year in a row at the par-72, 6,921-yard Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio. Hewit also nearly matched his 2008 score of 216. This year, Hewit carded a 54-hole total of 218 (73-70-75).
Freshman Wes Gates (227) and senior John Powers (231) rounded out the scoring for the Falcons.
The tournament medalist was Lucas Murray of Akron, who finished at ten-under-par (206).
The Falcons will next see action in Hebron, Kentucky at the Bearcat Invitational. That tourney will be held next Monday and Tuesday, October 12th and 13th.
