The Bowling Green State University men's golf team improved their team score in each round of the 2009 Renaissance Invitational, and their third round score of 290 was better than three of the 11 other teams in the field. Unfortunately, the round did not include a move up the standings, as the Falcons concluded the fall leg of their 2009-10 schedule by finishing in 12th place.
The Falcon effort did find individual success in the person of sophomore Parker Hewit. Hewit posted a career-low score of 213 on the par-72, 7,026-yard course. Over the 54 holes at the Club at Renaissance in Fort Myers, Florida, Hewit posted a team-best 69 in the second round and then carded a 70 to conclude the tournament today. Overall, Hewit finished three-under-par and in a tie for 18th place. Hewit finished just two shots behind the group of four that placed tenth.
John Powers closed out the first half of his senior season with an even-par 72 in today's third round. His round included one of the tournament's 13 eagles. Overall, Powers finished with a score of 220, good for a tie for 39th place.
Sophomore Drew Preston finished just behind Powers by carding a total of 222 for the tournament. Preston earned one-over-par rounds of 73 in the first and third rounds of the tourney on his way to a 41st-place tie.
Senior Matt Schneider finished his fall campaign by scoring 226 (76-75-75), while freshman Wes Gates stayed on Schneider's heels with a 227 (76-75-76).
As a team, the Orange and Brown totaled a score of 880 (296-294-290) for the tournament. The Falcons finished one shot behind Western Kentucky (879) and seven shots behind Eastern Kentucky (873). Troy (870) and Marshall (871) also finished within ten shots of Bowling Green.
The tournament's two Big Ten representatives, Indiana and Penn State, concluded the tournament at the top of the leaderboard. Indiana took the team title with a final score of 832; Penn State was second, just two shots behind the Hoosiers.
Indiana also took home individual medalist honors, as Alex Martin carded a 200 for the tournament, two shots ahead of Penn State's Kevin Foley and Liberty's Max McKay.
Bowling Green will resume their schedule in March with a trip to Humacao, Puerto Rico for the Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate, from March 8-10, 2010. The Falcons will play in four more tournaments after the Palmas Del Mar, before completing their season at the MAC Championships in Nashport, Ohio from April 30-May 2, 2010.
