Individual And Team School Records Set As Falcons Lead Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational
September 21, 2009 | Men's Golf
On day one of the Earl Yestingsmeier Intercollegiate in Muncie, IN, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team continued their incredibly hot start to the 2009-10 season. Drew Preston set a school record for individual score after 36 holes, while the team broke the school record for total score after 36 holes and cruised to a 14 shot lead after the first two rounds of the tourney.
The hot start puts the Falcons in position to win both individual and team tournament crowns for the second consecutive week.
Individually, sophomore Drew Preston is having not only his personal best tournament, but his score of 132 through today's 36 holes is the best 36-hole score in Bowling Green history. Preston bested the previous record of 136 by four strokes. Preston's career-low score for 54 holes is 218, while the school-record low for 54 holes is 208. Preston needs a 75 or better today to break that record.
Preston began the day with a five-under-par 65 in the first round. The round was only two shots shy of the school record (63). In the second round, Preston began slowly and was one-over-par through 12 holes. However, he finished with a flourish, scoring birdies on four of the final six holes to close with a three-under-par 67. Overall, Preston had birdies on 12 of the 36 holes, while he scored a bogey on only four.
At eight-under-par, Preston is the tournament leader going into the final round; Ball State's Eric Skillman is seven strokes behind.
Senior John Powers earned co-MAC Golfer of the week honors for finishing second in last year's Earl Yestingsmeier Intercollegiate, and he is near the top of the leaderboard again. Powers overcame a rough 12th hole in his first round to card a three-over-par 73. In the second round, Powers shot no worse than par on any hole and scored three birdies for a round of 67. His three-under-par effort gave him an even par score of 140 for the day. That score is good for sole possession of third place, just one shot behind Skillman.
Fellow senior Matt Schneider, who won last week's John Piper Intercollegiate, shared MAC Golfer of the Week honors with Power after last year's Earl Yestingsmeier Intercollegiate. Like Powers, Schneider finished second last year. This year, Schneider is once again in the top ten after the first day. Through 36 holes, he is tied for ninth place with a score of 142. Schneider's first round 67 (-3) included an eagle on the final hole; it was Bowling Green's only eagle of the day. He finished the day with a five-over-par 75 in the second round.
Freshman Wes Gates and sophomore Parker Hewit also competed for the Falcons. They each finished the day in the top 25. Gates tied for 15th place with a five-over-par 145 (74-71), while Hewit is tied for 22nd place after carding a seven-over-par 147 (71-76).
As a team, the Falcons put together a two-round score of 556 (276-280). That total sets a 36-hole school record, breaking the previous best of 562, set at the 2005 John Piper Intercollegiate. The first round score of 276 was only one shy of the team record (275), which was also set in the 2005 John Piper Intercollegiate. Bowling Green's four-under-par play gives them a 14 shot lead over second place Cincinnati (570). Tournament host Ball State is in third place after carding a 573. Belmont (574) and Loyola-Chicago (583) round out the top five.
If the Falcons shoot 288 or better in the final round, they will set the school record for a 54-hole score; the current record, set at that same 2005 John Piper tournament, is 845.
The third and final round will be held on Tuesday, September 22nd. It will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00am. Final results and a full recap will be available shortly after the completion of the tournament.
