Durkin Named New Offensive Line Coach
February 03, 2010 | Football
Bowling Green State University head football coach Dave Clawson has announced the hiring of new offensive line coach Bill Durkin. Durkin replaces John McDonell, who accepted the same position at Memphis.
Durkin brings 13 years of experience coaching the offensive line to Bowling Green, most recently at Hofstra, where he served as the offensive line coach and running game coordinator for the past two seasons for the Pride. He added assistant head coach to his title in 2009.
Prior to his time at Hofstra he spent 11 seasons at the University of Richmond (four years with Clawson, 2004-07), where he was part of four conference championship teams and is credited for developing the offensive line that led to a national championship in 2008.
He joined the Spiders' program in 1997 as tight ends and offensive tackles coach and coached two all-conference selections and one All-American during his three seasons in that capacity.
Durkin coached Richmond running backs from 2000 through the 2003 season before assuming the role of offensive line coach from 2004 through 2007. He added the run game coordinator title in 2007 as well.
The Spiders broke school records for rushing offense, total offense, total points scored, and single-game total offense and rushing offense marks in 2007 as Richmond advanced to the NCAA FCS Championship semifinals. In posting their third consecutive winning season for the first time in 52 years, the Spiders set a school-record with 11 wins.
Durkin, who began his coaching career as a strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater, the University of Massachusetts in 1995 and 1996, was a four-year letterman, a two-year team captain and first team all-conference selection in 1992 and 1993, and a consensus first team All-American in 1993 at UMass. He was named to the Yankee Conference 50th Anniversary All-Star Team.
Following graduation, he played with the New England Patriots and the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe, as well as the Shreveport Pirates and the Baltimore Stallions of the Canadian Football League.
Bill and his wife, Victoria, have two children, Ryan (6) and Rachel (4).
