Falcons Kickoff Spring Season With Trip to Puerto Rico

The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will travel to Humacao, Puerto Rico for the Palmas Del Mar Intercollegiate, beginning on Mar. 8. The 54-hole event will feature 14 teams.
The Field
Bowling Green, Ft. Hays, Indianapolis, James Madison, Johnson and Wales, Loyola, Ohio, Old Dominion, Rollins, Seton Hall, St. John's, St. Thomas Aquinas, South Carolina Upstate and Wilmington.
About the Falcons
The Falcons will enter the spring season with one of their strongest squads in recent memory. BGSU features a pair of seniors and a handful of underclassmen on a team that is averaging 292.71 per round which is over three strokes better than the school record of 296.00 set in the 2007-08 season.
During the Fall season the Orange and Brown won two events (John Piper and Earl Yestingsmeier) and had three other top seven finishes. According to golfweekrankings.com the Falcons rank 160th nationally and fifth in the Mid-American Conference with a team rating of 73.18.
Sophomore Drew Preston leads the team with a 72.88 and is seventh in the MAC with that scoring average. He has three top-five finishes including a first-place finish at the Earl Yestingsmeier Intercollegiate, scoring a 209 (65-67-77), one shot shy of the school record for 54 holes.
Matt Schneider is second on the team and ninth in he MAC with a 73.18 scoring average. He won the John Piper Intercollegiate to start the season, shooting a 211 (72-72-67). It was the second-consecutive year Schneider won the event.
Bowling Green, Ohio, native John Powers is third on the team and 16th in the MAC with an average of 74.29. He opened the year with a third-place finish at the John Piper (70-73-70) and a second-place finish at the Earl Yestingsmeier (73-67-71).
The Falcons No. 4 golfer this week will be freshman Wes Gates, who has made an immediate impact for the Orange and Brown. His scoring average of 75.06 is the third-best scoring average among freshmen in the MAC. Gates has three top-20 finishes, including finishing 10th at the John Piper (71-75-72).
The Falcons final golfer will be between Scott Blackburn and Chad Walker. Blackburn shot a 232 (75-77-80) and Walker scored a 236 (80-78-78) at the John Piper Intercollegiate, their only action in the Fall season.
