The third round of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships did not produce a change in the standings for the Bowling Green State University golf team. However, the day's action included the low round and first under-par score for an individual Falcon during this year's tournament.
Wes Gates, a Novi, Mich. native and BGSU's only freshman, recorded a one-under-par 71 on Sunday. Gates improved on his second round score by seven shots and improved by ten places in the individual standings, moving from a tie for 32nd place to a tie for 22nd place. His score is now 239 (80-78-71, +13).
Gates produced five birdies on Saturday, including one on each of the first two and last two holes of the round. His ten birdies ranks tops among BGSU golfers for the tournament, and nobody in the tourney has more than 13. Gates also has the second-best score among par-four holes for the weekend, with a three-round mark of even par on those holes. They account for 30 of the 54 holes so far.
The 71 also represents a tie for Gates' best round as a Falcon. Gates had a 71 in each of the first two tournaments during the fall (John Piper, Earl Yestingsmeier).
Sophomore Drew Preston also had a significant improvement in score on the second day of competition. Preston recorded the Falcons' second-best score of the day. His two-over-par 74 was ten shots better than his second round score, and it helped Preston move up in the standings. He now owns a total of 238 (80-84-74) this weekend.
Senior Matt Schneider will enter his final round of competition as a member of the Falcons on Sunday with a team-best tournament score of 228 (80-73-75). Schneider is currently tied for 20th place and trails 12th place by just five strokes.
Sunday's round will be the 132nd in Schneider's BGSU career. He will finish fewer than 200 strokes shy of 10,000 and with a career per-round average under 74.50.
John Powers joins Schneider as an exiting member of the senior class, and he enters the final round of the Championships at 235 (80-76-79), tied for 36th.
Powers has played 122 rounds for the Falcons and will conclude his tenure with a per-round average under 75.25.
Sophomore Parker Hewit added a 78 for the Orange and Brown on Saturday, and his weekend total of 232 (81-73-78) is tied for 31st.
As a team, BGSU is tied for seventh place with Toledo after three rounds. The Falcons' score of 918 (320-300-298) trails sixth place Northern Illinois by three strokes. Akron (3rd, 903), Miami (4th, 906) and Ohio (5th, 908) are all within 15 shots of the Falcons.
Kent State recorded an 860 through three rounds, features the top two individuals in the tournament and leads overall by 16 strokes.
The final round at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio will begin on Sunday at 7:45am. There will be 15 groups of three, and BGSU will have one entrant in each of the first five groups. A full listing of the final round tee times are linked at the top of this story.
