The Bowling Green State University men's golf team occupies seventh place, halfway through the 72 holes of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships.
The nine teams in this year's field got off to a relatively rocky start. Through 18 holes, none of the teams had come within five strokes of par, and only two had shot better than 306 (+18).
The teams adjusted to the course and day's conditions, allowing eight of the nine teams to score lower over the day's second round. The Falcons headed this pack, as BGSU improved their team score by 20 shots from the first to the second round. No other team in the field had a better improvement.
For the day, the Orange and Brown shot 620 (320-300) for a total of 44 shots over par. This score puts them within shouting distance of a top-three spot. BGSU is four shots behind Ball State, six behind Ohio and 12 behind Akron. The Falcons trail third-place Miami (607) by 13 strokes.
Kent State (578; +2) and Eastern Michigan (584; +8) are running away from the field in first and second place. Toledo (621) and Northern Illinois (624) trail BGSU in eighth and ninth place, respectively.
Individually, senior Matt Schneider leads the team with a two-round score of 153 (80-73). His total of nine over par places him in a tie for 21st, eleven shots behind the leader. Schneider's second round score was tied for seventh.
Sophomore Parker Hewit looks to improve on his 30th-place finish in his first MAC Championships. Through two rounds, he has achieved this. Like Schneider, Hewit recorded a second-round 73 on his way to a total of 154 for the day (81-73). Hewit's +10 is tied for 23rd place.
Like Schneider, senior John Powers is participating in his fourth and final MAC Championships. In Friday's action, Powers recorded a 156 (80-76) and ended the day tied for 26th.
On the other end of the experience spectrum, Wes Gates' is going through his first MAC title chase. Gates ended Friday tied for 32nd after carding a 158 (80-78).
