Schneider Ends Impressive Career as a Falcon
May 18, 2010 | Men's Golf
Matt Schneider's golf career at Bowling Green didn't end exactly like he had hoped.
But when you finish as perhaps the program's most decorated player, anything but first place can seem like a disappointment.
The Grand Rapids, Minn. native recently wrapped up his senior season with the best career scoring average by a Falcon, breaking a record that was once held by his own coach at BGSU.
The senior was named second-team All-Mid-American Conference after finishing tied for 17th at the MAC tournament earlier this month. That coming a year after Schneider tied for fifth at the tournament and earned first-team All-MAC as a junior.
"I knew I was capable of winning the tournament and it just didn't happen," Schneider said. "But I had a good career. I did accomplish a lot of the goals I had this year and throughout my career, so I can't really hang my head or be disappointed at all."
The 5-foot-11, 130-pounder finished in the top 20 of the MAC tournament all four years at BG. He finished his career (132 rounds) with an 18-hole average of 74.43, beating the old mark set by former teammate Jace Walker in 2007 by over half a stroke.
Current BG head coach Garry Winger had held the mark for 13 years, finishing his Falcon career in 1994 with an average of 75.00.
Winger has now seen two of his players break his old record.
"I played so long ago that you expect those to be broken," Winger said. "It just shows the type of student-athletes that we've recruited and that there are some darn good players that have had some great success here."
Schneider won two individual tournament titles this season, taking first at the John Piper Invitational for the second straight season, as well as winning the Ball State Cardinal Classic. His two individual wins this past season and three in his career are also BG records.
"It feels pretty good to have that on my résumé now, just because I know how good of a player Jace (Walker) was when I was here and how good coach (Winger) is," Schneider said. "There's a ton of other good players that have played before me so it feels really good."
"Matt was obviously a great player who got better every year from his freshman year on," Winger said. "He put together, in the body of work for four years, a wonderful career at Bowling Green."
Schneider has a few classes and an internship yet to finish to complete his degree in sport management at BGSU. He's currently at home in Minnesota for the summer, continuing to work on his golf game.
He said he hopes to continue his golf career, starting with qualifying for a professional tour.
"I want to see where my career can go," said Schneider, adding that he could go to either Arizona or North Carolina this summer for pro qualifying tournaments.
"My ultimate goal is to make it to the (PGA) Tour," he said. "That's all I think about is golf, and making it there.
"I've got a lot of work to do, I know that. But if I can just focus all my time on golf ... I think I can make it some day."
