BGSU hosts Windsor on Friday, heads to Oakland on Sunday
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team opens the 2010 schedule with a pair of exhibitions this weekend. The Falcons of second-year head coach Eric Nichols will host the University of Windsor in a Friday (Aug. 20) scrimmage before heading to Michigan to face Oakland University on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 22).
Friday's Windsor match begins at 5:00 p.m., and will be held on the team's practice field, just east of Cochrane Field (and just west of Doyt L. Perry Stadium).
Sunday's contest at Oakland kicks off at 2:00 p.m. at the OU Soccer Field in Rochester, Mich. Live stats will not be available for Friday's Windsor match, but will be available for Sunday's Oakland match by clicking here.
Admission to Friday's Windsor scrimmage will be free. In fact, as part of BGSU's Centennial celebration, there will be free admission to all of BGSU's home soccer matches in 2010.
Nichols begins his second season at the helm of the Falcons. He and assistant coach Paul Habrecht welcome back a total of 14 letterwinners from last year's club. The 2010 edition of the Falcons also has a total of 12 newcomers, including 10 true freshmen and a pair of NCAA Division-I transfers.
Windsor is coming off a 2009 season which saw the Lancers go 8-2-5, the program's best record since 1993. UW recorded 10 shutouts on the year, and was ranked No. 7 in Canada before suffering an upset loss to McMaster in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) quarterfinals.
Oakland posted an overall record of 9-5-3 last season, including a 5-0-1 mark in the Summit League. The Golden Grizzlies won the league's regular-season title before losing in the semifinal round of the conference tournament. Head coach Eric Pogue returns eight starters from that club.
BGSU has a total of three scrimmages before the regular season begins. Following this weekend's action, the Brown and Orange will host Indianapolis on Saturday, Aug. 28, to complete the exhibition slate. The regular season begins on Sept. 3 with a trip to North Carolina for a pair of games in the Davidson Tournament.
