The men's golf team at Bowling Green State University gets another chance to spin their early season magic on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 13 and 14) as they travel east to Huntington, W.V. for the 41st Marshall Invitational.
The Marshall University Thundering Herd and Guyan Country Club will host the 54-hole event. The first two rounds of the three round tournament will be played on Monday. The action gets underway with an 8:30 a.m. (local time) shotgun start. Then, on Tuesday, the final 18 holes commence at 8:00 a.m. local time.
This will be the 41st Marshall Invitational. The first two were held in 1968 and 1969; after a two-year hiatus, the tournament returned in 1972 and has been played every year since.
Who won that tournament in 1972? It just happened to be the Bowling Green Falcons, who put together a score of 371, defeating Virginia Tech by six strokes.
In last year's edition of the tournament, BGSU placed tenth in a field of 16 teams, scoring 892 over the three rounds and defeating host Marshall by six strokes.
This year's field runs 15 teams deep and includes some of the best teams in the region. Marshall will host the tournament, while BG will also have to face MAC foes Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Toledo. Also on the docket will be Ohio State and Virginia Tech. Rounding out the field are Austin Peay, Cleveland State, Eastern Kentucky, Richmond, William & Mary, Wright State and Xavier.
Individually, head coach Garry Winger will trot out the same lineup he used for the season-opening tournament in New York.
Sophomores Wes Gates and Charlie Olson will see action once again after tying for tenth place at the Tiger Intercollegiate. Freshman Chris Melvin will attempt to continue the good work he displayed in carding a 147 over the final two rounds in New York. And juniors Parker Hewit and team captain Drew Preston will offer veteran leadership on the course.
Redshirt junior Bryan Mitchell will see his first action of the season as well, competing as an individual.
A complete recap of each day of the tournament will be available shortly after completion of each day's play right here at BGSUFalcons.com.
