Bid on current item(s) in the Falcon Online Auction
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will tee off the 2010-11 season on Sunday (Sept. 5) as they travel to Verona, N.Y. for the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.
The two-day tournament, to conclude on Labor Day, will be hosted by the University of Missouri. It will be held at the Turning Stone Resort, which held a PGA Tour FedEx Cup event (the Turning Stone Resort Championship), last month.
Turning Stone is home to three courses. Atunyote, which hosted the PGA Tour event, is a par-72, 7,482-yard course. Kaluhyat measures just over 7,100 yards, while the Shenandoah course is over 7,000 yards long.
Five of this year's nine-member Falcon roster will make the trip with head coach Garry Winger. Two of those will be Falcon newcomers. Charlie Olson, a transfer from Hope College, will join freshman Chris Melvin in making their Falcon debuts.
Joining Olson and Melvin will be juniors Drew Preston and Parker Hewit, as well as sophomore Wes Gates.
Preston's 75.14 season average in 2009-10 is the best of this year's returning players. He set a 36-hole school record with a 132 at last year's Earl Yestingsmeier tournament on his way to medalist honors, and he also finished fifth at the Bearcat Invitational.
Hewit had an average of 75.45 in 33 rounds last year, recording a top-20 finish at the Rutherford Intercollegiate and a season-best round of 68 at the UK Bluegrass Invitational.
In his freshman campaign, Gates posted three top-20 finishes in the fall schedule, including a tenth place finish in his debut tournament, the John Piper Intercollegiate. His season-low round of 71 was achieved in each of his first two tourneys as well as in the third round of the MAC Championships.
The Falcons will face some very stiff competition in their debut tournament of 2010. Joining them in New York will be: Missouri, Purdue, Connecticut, South Florida, Kansas, as well as Cleveland State, Oakland, Central Connecticut State, St. Peter's, Canisius, George Washington, Binghamton, St. Bonaventure, Mount St. Mary's, Niagara, Seton Hall, and Delaware.
The tournament can be followed here at golfstat.com; complete results and a full recap will be available after the completion of each day of the tournament.
Post-tournament reaction will be available after the team returns from New York.
