Tradition permeates the game of golf. When you look at the Bowling Green State University men's golf team, you will notice that two traditions have developed over the past few seasons.
And those traditions show that the Falcons know how to get a season off on the right foot.
For the third consecutive year, BGSU is in strong contention for both individual and team titles after the first day of their season-opening tournament. And for the third time in that same span, a Falcon newcomer is making noise during their debut tournament with the team.
The Orange and Brown set a strong tone early by tying for fourth place after the first round with a score of 308. In the second round, they not only kept that pace -- they exceeded it. The Falcons' second round score of 297 was an 11-shot improvement and tied for the third-best second round score.
Overall, those two rounds gave BGSU a score of 605 and sole possession of second place going into tomorrow's final round.
Bowling Green's opponents are not lightweights, either. The Falcons are the only school in the top five from outside of the traditional power conferences of the NCAA's Division I. They trail tournament leader Purdue by 12 strokes, but also lead tournament-host Missouri, as well as Connecticut and Kansas.
Individually, BGSU entered this tournament with only four returning players. Over half of the nine-man roster is new to the team. Two of those newcomers, Charlie Olson and Chris Melvin, earned a chance to show what they could do this weekend.
Olson, a sophomore transfer from Hope College, is having an immediate impact. Olson recorded a 76 in his first round of the day and stood at two-over-par after nine holes of his second round. Then he made a charge. Olson birdied four of his final nine holes to record an even-par 72, giving him a 148 for the day.
That score places Olson fourth overall, just one stroke behind the pair tied for second and only four strokes behind the tournament leader (Jakob Ziegler, Oakland).
Melvin, a freshman from Medfield, Mass., earned three birdies in his first round. Unfortunately, he also struggled mightily at times and ultimately carded an 87.
After the break between rounds, Melvin got back up and showed the mettle that all Falcons aspire to. He posted three more birdies but found consistency and registered a second-round 74 -- tied for Bowling Green's second-best individual score of the day. In fact, Melvin's second round allowed him to improve by 26 spots in the overall standings.
Also putting up a round of 74 today was junior Parker Hewit. With two birdies, Hewit played even over the final 11 holes of the first round and found himself in a third-place tie.
Hewit struggled to open the second round, posting two triple-bogeys in his first five holes. He found his stroke again, however, and played one-under-par over the final 10 holes. With his second-round 76, Hewit had a score of 150 for the day and currently resides in the top ten.
Sophomore Wes Gates is tied for 29th after the first day with a score of 154. Gates earned five birdies on the day. Meanwhile, junior Drew Preston served up three straight birdies in his second round on the way to a round of 75. His 156 (81-75) for the day is good for a tie for 34th.
The field is tightly compacted, with Hewit, Gates and Preston all within 10 shots of second place, so each has a chance for a significant move up the leaderboard with a strong final round.
The final round commences tomorrow morning at 7:30am on the Kaluhyat course of the Turning Stone resort in Verona, N.Y. with a shotgun start.
Once the round is complete, a full recap and final tournament results will be posted here at BGSUFalcons.com.
