Bid on the current item(s) in the Falcon Online Auction
The 2010 season opened for the Bowling Green State University men's golf team this weekend in Verona, N.Y., when the Falcons competed in the 54-hole Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.
Coming into this weekend, the Falcons were an unknown commodity with a nine-man roster comprised of five newcomers and nobody with more than two seasons of experience.
After the three rounds of the season-opening tournament, a picture is beginning to take shape -- one that should give rise to optimism for the rest of the season.
The Falcons entered today's final round in second place, with a first-day score of 605. Bowling Green slipped to third place in the final standings but posted a strong third round and ended the tourney by scoring 903 (308-297-298).
The tournament's 18-team field combined for only seven sub-300 rounds this weekend, and Bowling Green earned two of those. In fact, BGSU joined Missouri and Connecticut as the only teams to post two sub-300 rounds in the tournament.
Even better, Bowling Green posted one of the top three team scores in each of the three rounds, Their first- and second-round scores of 308 and 297 were third-best out of the 18-team field, while the final round 298 was eclipsed only by Missouri's 294.
Overall, Purdue took home the Tiger Intercollegiate's top spot with a mark of 897, six strokes ahead of Bowling Green. Missouri finished second, three shots behind Purdue. Connecticut (908) and Central Connecticut State (914) earned fourth and fifth place, respectively. Nobody else came within 15 strokes of the Falcons.
Individually, two Falcons tied for tenth at nine-over-par (225), while another registered top-20 spot by tying for 18th at 228.
Sophomore Wes Gates sank two birdies over the final six holes to complete a final-round 71. At one-under-par, Gates had the only under-par round for the Orange and Brown. He combined the 71 with his two rounds of 77 on Sunday to help pace the Falcons in tenth place.
Joining Gates in tenth place is fellow sophomore Charlie Olson, a transfer from Hope College. Olson finished his final round with two birdies and carded a 77 (+5). Olson's total of 225 included rounds of 76 and 72 on Sunday.
Junior Parker Hewit ended the tournament only three strokes off the pace set by Gates and Olson, finishing with a score of 228 (74-76-78). The 18th place finish is his second top-20 in his last three tournaments, dating back to last season's Rutherford Intercollegiate.
Fellow junior Drew Preston improved his standing on the leaderboard by two spots with a final round 77, posting a tournament total of 233 (81-75-77).
Meanwhile, freshman Chris Melvin concluded his debut tournament in very strong fashion. After posting an 87 in the first round for 79th place, Melvin carded rounds of 74 and 73 to finish at 234. On the leaderboard, Melvin improved by 43 spots over the final two rounds to finish tied for 36th. His 36-hole score of 147 over the final two rounds was the best combined two-round score by a Falcon for the entire weekend.
Bowling Green will now take a week off before traveling to Huntington, W.V. for the Marshall Invitational on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 13-14.
