With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in MAC action. BGSU has topped the overall win total for all of last season. In fact, BG has not won as many as seven matches in a season since 2003. FAU drops to 5-5-1 and 0-2-0, respectively.
A pair of first-year Falcons, freshman Danny Baraldi and junior Rodcliff Hall, scored those second-half goals. Baraldi struck with just 19 seconds gone in the period, and Hall scored at the 48:20 mark.
BGSU had taken a 1-0 lead into the intermission, benefitting from an own goal midway through the opening half. A corner kick by Baraldi was headed into the net by an FAU defender at the 23:15 mark.
When the second half began, redshirt junior Zach Lemke poked the ball away from a Florida Atlantic player approximately 40 yards from goal. Lemke lunged to knock the ball from left to right across the pitch. As the ball rolled toward the penalty area, Baraldi ran onto it and hit a one-timer that beat FAU goalkeeper Jeremy Crumpton, giving the Falcons a two-goal margin just 19 seconds into the period.
Three minutes later, senior tri-captain Tanner Fink played a long ball ahead to Hall. Hall, with a defender draped all over him, shielded the ball away from the FAU backliner, took a few dribbles and uncorked a shot that eluded the diving effort of Crumpton for a three-goal margin. From there, sophomore 'keeper Michael Wiest and the BG defense did the rest.
The Falcons held a 14-7 advantage in total shot attempts, and BG did not allow a single shot on goal, as the home team enjoyed a 6-0 margin in that column. Wiest was not forced to make a save en route to his fifth shutout in seven starts this season to date.
Crumpton made two saves in 82-plus minutes before giving way to Scott Powers. Powers, making his FAU debut, had one save in his 7:55 of work.
The Owls controlled possession for much of the first 10 to 15 minutes of Sunday's match, and FAU had the first two shot attempts of the match. The Falcons then began to come alive at the offensive end of the pitch, firing the next three shots of the day.
Sophomore Ryan Snashall, Fink and Baraldi each took shots during that span. And, Snashall nearly had another chance, but FAU's Joachim Hansteen made a nice defensive play to knock the ball away from the Falcon soph as he tried to cut to his left in the penalty area.
A BG flurry with 26 minutes gone very nearly put the Falcons ahead. Baraldi's free kick was tipped on goal by Snashall, but Crumpton got a hand on the ball to make the save at the far post. Fink's follow try from close range was blocked by an Owl defender.
Then, midway through the period, the Falcons got on the scoreboard, thanks to the own goal. Baraldi took a corner kick from the left side of the field, and as several players jumped, an FAU defender got a head on the ball and inadvertantly deflected it into his own net.
Less than a minute after the goal, Hall had a scoring chance after a steal. But, Crumpton was able to grab the ball as the Falcon junior tried to elude him in the box.
The Owls had a 7-3 advantage in shot attempts in the opening half, although BG had the only two shots on goal (including the own goal). That would all change in the second half, as the Falcons had an 11-0 advantage in shots, putting four on goal, and two of those four in the net. In fact, BGSU scored on the first two shot attempts of the period.
Only 19 seconds into the period, BGSU would double the lead when Lemke's steal resulted in Baraldi's goal into the lower left side of the net. Then, Fink's long ball over the top led to Hall's one-on-one goal, and the Falcons were on their way to the seventh win of the season.
With under seven minutes gone in the half. redshirt sophomore Brandon Silva got his head on a Baraldi corner kick. Silva, facing the left side of the pitch, nodded the ball behind him and toward the far (right) post, but Crumpton was able to gather the shot.
Nearly 60 minutes into the match, sophomore Zach Schewee played a ball forward to Hall, in much the same manner that Fink had just over 10 minutes earlier. This time, however, the Owls' Timothy Merrigan was able to stay with Hall, blocking the junior's shot and enabling Crumpton to corral the ball.
With 17 minutes left, senior Colin Armstrong's hustle play gave the Falcons a scoring chance. Armstrong stole the ball on the left side of the 18-yard box and slid a pass across the goalmouth. Freshman Jon Kumher got there at the same time as an FAU backliner. Kumher got a boot on the ball, but could not get a lot of force behind his shot, and the Owls were able to clear the ball out of danger.
All was relatively quiet for Wiest at the other end of the field, however, as FAU occasionally made a foray into the BG end, but never got a shot off in the final 45 minutes. Wiest's back line of senior Byard Ebling, freshman Alex Bechtol, Fink and Schewee did not let the Owls put a shot on goal during the entire match, as the Falcons posted their sixth shutout of the year to date.
The Falcons now hit the road for the next three matches, beginning Wednesday (Oct. 5). BGSU will head to Columbus for a match against Ohio State, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
