With the win, the Bulls improve to 7-5-1 overall and 2-0-0 in MAC action. The Falcons drop to 7-4-1 and 1-1-0, respectively.
The match was tied for the first 54-plus minutes, and the home team led by just a single goal with under 20 minutes left in the match. But, UB scored four times in a span of just over 13 minutes to remove all doubt about the game's outcome.
UB's Maksym Kowal scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal at the 54:54 mark. Kowal took a pass from Patrick Ryan and scored on a breakaway from approximately 15 yards out.
"I don't think the final score is indicative of how the game went," said Falcon head coach Eric Nichols. "We actually had some good possession, and defended pretty well for the majority of the game.
"Unfortunately, we did not create enough chances. Once we conceded the first goal, we had a few chances to tie it, but the second and third goals were bang-bang goals, and kind of did us in. I think this clearly illustrates that the difference between winning and losing is very small."
Joey Merlo had a pair of goals for the Bulls, with the team's second and fifth scores. Nate Woods and Vinny Divirglio found the net as well, with their goals coming only 29 seconds apart. Kowal had an assist on Merlo's first goal, while Andy Tiedt assisted on UB's final two goals.
Jonathan Viscosi stopped four shots for the Bulls en route to the shutout win. For the Falcons, sophomore Michael Wiest made four saves.
"Credit to Buffalo, as they did well to put the game away," said Nichols. "But, I don't think the difference between the two teams is five goals, and the difference between winning and losing big isn't very much, either.
"We will lick our wounds, and we'll get back to work this week."
BGSU now has a week and a half before the next game. The Falcons will head to East Lansing, Mich., for a match vs. Michigan State University on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
