BGSU Returns To The Links At Rice Intercollegiate

Falcons Had Top-Three Finishes in Three of Six Fall Tournaments
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team concludes their winter hibernation this weekend, as they are set to travel to Houston, Texas for their first tournament of the spring season.
The Falcons, who captured the John Piper Intercollegiate and had two other top-three finishes in the fall, begin their march to the Mid-American Conference Championships at the 11th annual Rice Intercollegiate.
The two-day tournament will be held at the Westwood Golf Club, which features a par-72, 7,184-yard course. Joining the Falcons at Westwood will be 14 teams, mostly from Texas and the surrounding states. However, BGSU will be joined in the field by one familiar foe from the MAC -- the Miami Redhawks.
Rice is the defending team champion in their home tournament. In 2010, the Owls shot 292 in the final round for a total of 886, which won by 19 strokes over Auburn University. Rice's own Christopher Brown won individual top honors with a total of 216; his final round score of 69 was the only sub-70 round of the tournament.
The Falcons will send five members of the team to compete. The group will feature Drew Preston and Charlie Olson, each of whom won a tournament in the six-event fall schedule. Preston won top honors at the John Piper Intercollegiate, while Olson won at the APSU Intercollegiate to close play in October.
Wes Gates and Parker Hewit join Preston and Olson in Houston. Gates (73.12) and Hewit (73.24) had the second- and third-best averages on the team in the fall, respectively. Each of them also had top-ten finishes to their name.
Chris Melvin, who had a season-best score of 211 (70-71-70) at the Marshall Invitational, will also compete for the Orange and Brown.
Bowling Green enters the tournament with a per-round team average of 290.0, which is on pace to shatter the team record of 296. The team has shot better-than-average in 11 of 17 rounds to date.
