Charlie Edwards Named Men’s Soccer Assistant Coach
March 03, 2011 | Men's Soccer
Bowling Green State University men's soccer coach Eric Nichols has announced the hiring of Charlie Edwards as assistant coach. Edwards, who comes to BGSU from the University of Dayton, already has begun his duties with the Falcons.
“Charlie has great energy and drive, as well as solid experiences as a player and a coach,” said Nichols. “He is sure to have an immediate and positive impact on the program, and we are thrilled to have him join us.”
Edwards spent the 2010 season as a volunteer assistant on the UD staff. He worked primarily with the goalkeepers for head coach Dennis Currier, but also performed a myriad of duties in the office and on the pitch. Edwards helped with administrative duties and travel arrangements, and also helped to plan camps and manage the recruit database.
In the fall of 2010, Dayton's 'keeper, Tyler Picard, was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference Second Team. Picard had eight complete-match shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.79.
“I am very excited for the opportunity that Coach Nichols has given me to be a part of the staff here at BGSU,” said Edwards. I respect what Coach Nichols is doing here; this program is moving in a positive direction. I want to continue that success and really have an impact on the program.”
Edwards worked at the University of Central Florida prior to heading to Dayton. While at UCF, he worked with the team's five 'keepers, helping to plan and conduct goalkeeping sessions, and performed various administrative duties for the program.
A 2008 graduate of the University of Louisville, Edwards was a two-year starter for the Cardinals. He was a member of the '07 team that advanced to the semifinal round of the Big East Tournament and the second round of the NCAA Championships. A native of Lilburn, Ga., he was a member of the conference's Commissioner's Honor Roll in both 2006 and '07.
In addition to his stints with Dayton and UCF, Edwards also has coaching experience with several teams at the club level. He coached the Oldham County Thoroughbreds in 2008 and 2009, serving as head coach of the U-10 and U-12 boys' teams while also serving as the head goalkeeping coach of the top club-level squad. He also was the had coach of the Metro FC U-15 and U-18 boys' teams.
Edwards graduated from U of L in the spring of 2008 with a bachelor's degree in sport administration. He currently holds a USSF “D” coaching license as well as a level III NSCAA National Goalkeeper Diploma.
