March 31, 2011 | General
Falcon student-athletes are donating their time and effort toward one of Ohio largest student-run philanthropic events, Dance Marathon.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University student-athletes are preparing to contribute to one of the University's largest philanthropic events taking place this weekend. Members across many of the University's 18 varsity athletic programs will contribute in a variety of ways to help the effort most notable for its catch phrase, “For the Kids!”
Dance Marathon officially kicks off its 32-hour dance-a-thon at the Student Recreational Center (SRC) on Saturday, March 2 at 10 a.m. University students, faculty, staff and community members totaling in the hundreds, if not thousands, will engage in a slue of activities and dance routines throughout the weekend. The event will conclude the following day at 6 p.m. where the event staff will unveil the final amount of funds raised toward Dance Marathon 2011. Last year, Dance Marathon raised over $152,000 towards their cause.
Bowling Green student-athletes will be participating in many of the organization's activities, including the Bikes for Tikes campaign. Bikes for Tikes is a three-day, 180-mile bicycle ride beginning in Franklin, Ohio (Cincinnati area) and ending at the SRC. Participants will depart for Cincinnati on Thursday afternoon, bus to Franklin and begin their trek in the early hours of Friday morning. Four teams of riders, totaling nearly 130 people, will stop in Saint Paris and Ada, Ohio before they return to the very site of Dance Marathon on Sunday at approximately 4 p.m.
Representing BGSU student-athletes on the bike ride is swimmer Sarah Burston (Sydney, Australia). The senior will ride for an injured member of the Bikes For Tikes team. Check this very page each day for a daily blog from the Bikes for Tikes crew and photos of the event. Withstanding the physical and mental endurance of being a full-participating dancer is Falcon track and field and cross-country runner Katie Borgelt (McComb, Ohio). Borgelt will be a member of one of the nine color coded teams and serve as a dancer. Dancers are expected to fundraise for the Dance Marathon cause but more demandingly, stay on their feet for 32 hours consecutively line dancing, playing with the Miracle Family children and in general, having a good time.
Falcon baseball will assist in the Dance Marathon event by inviting one of the program's Miracle Families on to the field to participate in the team's warm up routine prior to their Saturday afternoon home game versus Eastern Michigan. The family will also be invited to toss the honorary first pitch to open the day's action between the Falcons and Eagles.
On Sunday, April 3, Dance Marathon will have “Athlete Hour” from 12 noon to 1 p.m. where various athletic programs will be represented in different activities. The men and women's basketball teams will entertain participants with a “Knockout” showdown. Falcon tennis will also be in attendance during Athlete Hour giving an energy boost with tennis-related activities to fuel the crowd. The University swimming and women's soccer teams will also be in attendance engaging with the Miracle Families, dancers and other student-athletes.
BGSU Hockey will join an effort to accomplish a feat never before accomplished. Dance Marathon has set a goal to have at least one person constantly running on the SRC track for all 32 hours while the marathon progresses. Multiple members of the Falcon hockey team will contribute the time and energy to accomplish this goal, running the track at various times to keep the streak alive.
Dance Marathon is a philanthropic event on an enormous scale to benefit ill or injured children at the Mercy Children's Hospital in Toledo via the Children's Miracle Network. It is run entirely by college students nationwide to benefit local children's hospitals, raises money for families in need and provides those families and their children with unforgettable moments. Bowling Green State University is proud to have one of the largest and most active Dance Marathon organizations in the nation, entering its sixteenth year at the University. Bowling Green's Dance Marathon is the largest student-run philanthropy in the state of Ohio and has raised over $2.2 million in its history.
