Falcons Aim For Repeat Title At Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational
April 14, 2011 | Men's Golf
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team continues their trek towards the Mid-American Conference Championship with a trip to Muncie, Ind. for the 2011 Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (April 16-17).
The 54-hole, two-day tournament will be played at Muncie's Delaware Country Club. The course stretches over 6,438 yards and plays at a par 70.
The Falcons have found quite a bit of success at the Earl Yestingsmeier event over the last two season. In the fall of 2008, BGSU tied for fifth after a tournament score of 873 (284-287-302). Of the group that went to Muncie that year, Parker Hewit and Bryan Mitchell still compete for the Falcons, and both will play in this year's tourney. Hewit shot a 223, while Mitchell carded a 232.
Twelve months later, Bowling Green captured the championship at the 2009 Earl Yestingsmeier tournament. Records for 36-hole scores were set by both Drew Preston (132) and the team (556), and several other team records nearly fell. The Falcons ended up with a 54-hole total of 850 (276-280-294), while Drew Preston won the individual championship by shooting 209 (65-67-77).
Three Falcons finished in the top ten. Hewit competed and once again shot a 223, while Wes Gates earned a top-20 finish with a total of 219.
More recently, Bowling Green finished eighth at the UK Bluegrass Invitational. The team posted rounds of 293 and 299 on their way to an 901 for the tournament. Gates was the team's top finisher as he tied for 18th (221) after rounds of 72 and 70. Preston looks to bounce back after posting a 226 and finishing 35th.
This year's edition of the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational will be slightly different than the previous two. Teams will consist of six players and the top five scores will count. Typically, teams consist of five players with the top four scores counting towards the team total.
The Falcon six includes Preston, Hewit, Gates and Mitchell. Charlie Olson and Torey Brummett will play in this event for the first time beginning on Saturday.
Saturday's play begins at 9:00 a.m. local time with a shotgun start. Preston and Gates tee off from the first hole, while Olson and Hewit begin on the second hole. Brummett begins his day on hole three, and Mitchell finishes the Falcon contingent on the fourth hole. Play will be continuous for 36 holes.
The final round begins on Sunday, also at 9:00 a.m., with another shotgun start. Live scoring for all rounds can be accessed HERE. Scoring will be updated every three-to-six holes.
A total of 14 schools will field 15 teams this weekend. Host Ball State will compete in two different squads, while two other MAC schools, Ohio and Northern Illinois, will also travel to Muncie. Four schools from the Horizon League join the MAC competitors -- those include Butler, Cleveland State, Valparaiso and Wright State.
Other teams in this weekend's field are: Austin Peay, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Marshall, and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
According to the most recent (April 11) Golfweek Sagarin ratings, Ball State (116) and Bowling Green (131) are the two highest-ranked teams in the tournament. Bowling Green enters the event with a season record of 75-41.
