Falcons Announce Signing For 2011-12
April 20, 2011 | Men's Golf
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team and head coach Garry Winger have announced the signing of recruit Joe Cooper to a national letter of intent. He will join the Falcons for the 2011-12 season.
Cooper hails from Wayland, Mass. and will arrive at BGSU after a very accomplished high school career.
Cooper won the 2009 Massachusetts state championship after posting a three-under-par 67. In the process, he led Wayland High School to its first-ever state team championship. He followed that with a runner-up finish in the 2010 state tournament, as he finished with a one-under-par 71, just one shot behind the state champion. Partly as a result of his state championship, Wayland earned the Boston Globe's Golfer of the Year award for 2009-2010.
He is also a four-time Dual County League All-Star, a three-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic athlete, and a state record-holder. Cooper broke the state's nine-hole record with a five-under-par 31 earlier this season.
The left-hander brings a 74.50 scoring average to the Falcons, and he's played on courses up-and-down the East Coast. In January of 2009, he placed fifth at the IJGT Mid-Season Championship, scoring a 150 playing on the World Golf Hall of Fame course. In September of that year, he played twice in Bethpage, N.Y. on the Bethpage Red course. Cooper finished ninth (148) at the Northeast Junior Classic, then scored a 72 to place third at the IJGT Bethpage Red tournament.
Last June, Cooper placed second overall after a 36-hole total of 145 (69-76) in Ocean City, Mary. at the UnderArmour College Golf Combine. In October, he tied for first (71) at the Doral Publix Sectional Qualifier, then earned fourth place in his return to the Northeast Junior Classic after a two-round total of 145 (74-71).
About Cooper, Coach Winger said, "I think Joe will be an outstanding addition to our team. He is a young man who comes from an outstanding family and has great character. We look forward to Joe joining the Falcon Golf family in the fall."
Cooper will become the second Falcon from the state of Massachusetts. Current freshman Chris Melvin came to the Falcons from Medfield, Mass. after earning league champion and Tri-Valley All-Star honors in 2009.
Melvin and seven other returning Falcons will join Cooper on BGSU's nine-man roster in the fall. The team does not have any outgoing seniors this season.
