Regular Season Ends For Falcons At Boilermaker Invitational
April 21, 2011 | Men's Golf
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team faces one final challenge prior to competing in the Mid-American Conference championship tournament when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind. on Saturday and Sunday (April 23-24) for the 2011 Boilermaker Invitational.
The 54-hole tournament will be played at Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The par-72 Kampen Golf Course plays to a length of 7,465 yards. The first two rounds are scheduled for Saturday and will begin with an 8:45 a.m. (Eastern) shotgun start. The final round begins on Sunday, also at 8:45 a.m., with tee times off of the front and back nine.
The Falcons, ranked 128th in the most recent (April 17) Golfweek Sagarin rating, enter the tournament with an 87-42 overall record and a 7-11 mark against MAC teams. Bowling Green will face ten different opponents this weekend, including MAC opponents Northern Illinois and Ohio. The Falcons have defeated Ohio in each of the five tournaments in which both have participated during the 2010-11 season.
Three of the other eight teams in the field are ranked in the nation's top 100. Host Purdue, with a record of 72-43-4, plays as the top-ranked team (53rd). Notre Dame follows Purdue closely and is ranked 57th overall. Idaho's record (94-34-1) helps the Vandals reach 70th among all NCAA Division I teams.
Hartford, Western Illinois, Chicago State, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne (IPFW) and Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis (IUPUI) round out this weekend's tournament field.
Bowling Green last competed in this tournament two years ago, and three current Falcons participated in that event. Drew Preston, in his first season with BGSU, posted rounds of 71 and 73 before finishing with a 224. Bryan Mitchell and Parker Hewit also competed, each carding totals of 233.
In the team's most recent action, the Falcons placed second at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational. The team had two of the lowest three rounds in the tournament, scoring marks of 365 and 368 over the final 36 holes. Drew Preston finished third individually (216), while Wes Gates and Parker Hewit each placed in the top ten.
This weekend, six Falcons will compete -- Wes Gates, Parker Hewit, Drew Preston, Charlie Olson, Chris Melvin and Torey Brummett. One will compete as an individual, but that decision has not been made at this time.
Head coach Garry Winger commented, "We are looking forward to competing this weekend on one of the most challenging courses we will ever play. With what looks like some challenging weather this weekend, I am looking forward to seeing our team continue to make positive strikes heading into next weekend's MAC Championship."
