BGSU Tees Off At UK Bluegrass Invitational This Weekend
April 07, 2011 | Men's Golf
After taking the last month to prepare, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team begins a four-week gauntlet of four tournaments this weekend in Lexington, Ky. at the UK (Kentucky) Bluegrass Invitational.
The Falcons will play 54 holes over two days at the University Club of Kentucky. The Big Blue course plays to a par of 71 and is 7,013 feet long. The first 36 holes are slated for Saturday (April 9) beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Play will continue until the 36 holes are complete. The final round begins on Sunday (April 10) at 8:00 a.m. with staggered tee times.
The team leading after 36 holes will tee off last, while the team in last place will tee off first.
Bowling Green faces a large field of 17 other teams, including three from the Mid-American Conference. Ohio, Toledo and Akron will all join the Falcons in Lexington. The field includes schools from the Southeastern Conference (Kentucky, Auburn), the Big Ten Conference (Michigan State), and the Big East Conference (Cincinnati).
Other competing schools include: Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Lipscomb, Loyola (Chicago), Marshall, Morehead State, Utah Valley, Valparaiso, Western Carolina and Western Kentucky.
The Falcons enter the tournament ranked fourth in the field in the most recent Golfweek Sagarin ratings, released on April 3rd. BGSU is ranked 126th; only Auburn, Kentucky (105) and Akron (114) are ranked better. Auburn is ranked sixth in the entire nation.
Overall, the Falcons own a 65-34 record and are the MAC leaders in per-round scoring average. Their mark of 290.30 is six strokes better than the current school record in the category, and the trend could be important -- BGSU has not finished better than sixth in the MAC championship tournament since 1995 and has not won since 1983.
Three of Bowling Green's golfers rank in the top ten in the MAC in scoring average, and each will be playing this weekend. Drew Preston (72.55) ranks fourth in the conference, while Wes Gates (73.25) and Parker Hewit (73.60) are seventh and eighth, respectively.
In fact, the Orange and Brown play five of the top 24 golfers in the MAC thus far in the 2010-11 season. Chris Melvin's average of 75.12 earned the 24th position in the conference, and he will look to improve upon that this weekend. Charlie Olson, who is not playing in Lexington, ranks 15th in the conference.
Torey Brummett, a sophmore from Oregon, Ohio, joins Preston, Hewit, Gates and Melvin in Lexington for this weekend's tournament. The event will be Brummett's second as a Falcon; he also played in the John Piper Intercollegiate last September.
Bowling Green will attempt to keep alive an important streak this weekend -- the team has ocmpleted eight straight rounds of sub-300 play. This follows a streak of ten straight rounds earlier in the season. In fact, the team has played only one of its last 19 rounds (and only two of 20 overall) at or above 300.
Live results will not be available this weekend; however, complete results and a full recap will be posted following the conclusion of play on both days of the event.
