Men's Soccer Falcons Announce 2011 Schedule
June 10, 2011 | Men's Soccer
Bowling Green State University men's soccer coach Eric Nichols has announced his team's fall schedule for 2011. The Falcons' 18-match regular-season slate includes four matches against teams that advanced to the Round of 16 in last year's NCAA Championships, including a pair of contests vs. teams that participated in the 2010 NCAA College Cup.
The Falcons' schedule also features eight regular-season matches inside the friendly confines of Cochrane Field, with the potential for some of those contests to be played under the lights. Groundbreaking for the Cochrane Field lights project, a continuation of improvements to the facility, is scheduled to take place during the summer of 2011.
And, for the Falcons, the season starts with three consecutive games at Cochrane. After a pair of scrimmages, the regular season begins with a match vs. Michigan, a national semifinalist in 2010, on Friday night, Aug. 26. BG faced the Wolverines under the lights in Ann Arbor in both 2009 and '10.
The homestand continues with matches vs. IPFW (Aug. 31) and Cleveland State (Sept. 3) before the Falcons hit the road for tournaments on back-to-back weekends. The Brown and Orange will travel to Western Pennsylvania for matches against Duquesne (Sept. 9) and Pittsburgh (Sept. 11) in the latter school's Pitt/Nike Invitational. Then, BG will venture to Nashville to meet Belmont (Sept. 16) and Lipscomb (Sept. 18) at the Hyatt Place Select/Lipscomb Invitational).
Following the Lipscomb match, the Falcons return to Northwest Ohio for the second three-match homestand of the season. BGSU will face Detroit (Sept. 21) and IUPUI (Sept. 30) in a pair of matches vs. regional foes, then will begin the month of October as well as the Mid-American Conference schedule by hosting Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Oct. 2.
That FAU contest is a rematch of last year's final regular-season game. In that match in Boca Raton, the Falcons picked up a 2-1 victory to clinch a top-four finish and a trip to the MAC Tournament.
BGSU then hits the road for three-straight contests, including two against NCAA tourney participants from the Big Ten Conference. The Falcons will travel to Columbus for a matchup with Ohio State on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The Buckeyes advanced to the NCAA's round of 16 last November.
The Falcons then head to New York for the first MAC road match of the season, taking on Buffalo (Oct. 8). The road swing concludes with a trip to Michigan State a week and a half later (Oct. 19). The Spartans, like Ohio State, were one of the last 16 teams still playing in 2010, advancing to the NCAA tourney's third round before succumbing.
BG closes the month of October with three consecutive MAC matches, playing at home on back-to-back Saturdays. Those games will see the Falcons face Hartwick (Oct. 22) and Northern Illinois (Oct. 29).
The Hartwick and NIU contests are sandwiched around a trip to Northeast Ohio for a matchup against the defending national champions. BGSU will face College Cup winner Akron on Wednesday, Oct. 26. All three of BG's midweek matches are against schools that advanced to the NCAA tourney.
The regular season concludes with two November road contests, as the Falcons battle Wright State for the I-75 Cup on Tuesday, Nov. 1, then head to Kalamazoo to close the conference schedule against Western Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 5.
The top-four teams in the MAC's final regular-season standings will converge on the site of the regular-season champion for the conference tournament. The MAC Tournament's semifinal round will take place on Friday, Nov. 11, with the championship match set for Sunday, Nov. 13.
Prior to the season-opening match vs. Michigan, Nichols and the Falcons will play scrimmages at Cincinnati (Aug. 15) and at home vs. Butler (Aug. 21). The Bulldogs lost only one match all last season, in the NCAA Championships against Michigan State.
