Powers Had Seven Top-Ten Finishes in His Four Seasons at BGSU
John Powers, a member of the Bowling Green State University men's golf team from 2006-10, has been hired as the head golf coach at St. Bonaventure University.
Powers was a four-year letterwinner for the Falcons and played in 123 rounds during his collegiate career. Over his four seasons, he shot a per-round average of 75.18.
During his freshman season, Powers won the University of Dayton Spring Invitational. Throughout his time at BGSU, he finished in the top five a total of four times and added three other top-ten finishes. In his final two seasons, Powers earned top-20 scores on eight occasions.
Powers graduated from BGSU with a degree in Sport Management. Following the completion of his senior season, he played on the Florida Professional Golf Tour. On Feb. 27 at the Wildwood Open, Powers posted one of the rarest feats in golf – an albatross (double eagle) – by scoring a two on the tenth hole (par five).
He also served as a golf club intern at Ohio State University during the 2010 golf season and, since March, has overseen daily operations of the golf shop at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio.
“John comes from a tremendous golf program at Bowling Green with a highly respected coach in Garry Winger. He had an excellent four-year playing career and learned a lot about the game under Winger's tutelage,” said Steve Campbell, the Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations at St. Bonaventure. “His successful playing career and the connections he has built will serve him well in boosting the program's recruiting.
(Bowling Green head coach) Winger said, “John was a great leader as a player and that ultimately prepared him for his role as the men's golf coach at St. Bonaventure. Having known John and his family for almost 20 years, I could not be prouder of him. I wish him the very best at St. Bonaventure.”
Powers begins his tenure as coach of the Bonnies immediately. He inherits a program with five returning players and three newcomers. St. Bonaventure placed eighth at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
