Drew Preston Qualifies For 2011 United States Amateur Championship

Drew Preston, who will begin in his senior season with the Bowling Green State University men's golf team this fall, qualified on Tuesday for the 2011 United States Amateur Championship. The championship tournament will take place at the Erin Hills Golf Club in Erin, Wis. from Aug. 22-29, 2011.

At the Muskegon Country Club in Muskegon, Mich. Preston shot back-to-back rounds of 71 to finish in a three-way tie for second place with a composite 142. He trailed the leader by one stroke.

The 2011 U.S. Amateur, held at the future site of the 2017 United States Open Championship, will begin with two rounds of stroke play. The top 64 golfers then compete in a head-to-head match play tournament to determine the champion. Each match in the first five rounds consists of 18 holes; the championship match is 36 holes.

This will be the second appearance at the U.S. Amateur Championship for Preston. Two years ago, as a sophomore, Preston shot a 152 (74-78) to place 143rd out of 311 at the Cedar Ridge Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Preston is one of the most accomplished golfers in Falcon program history. He has two career victories and seven top-five finishes. His career per-round average (74.81) is less than a half-stroke shy of the record set by former Falcon Matt Schneider. His 2011 average (73.27 in 33 rounds) led the team and ranked among the top five in the Mid-American Conference.

For the Falcons, this marks the third consecutive year in which a current or former team member has qualified for the U.S. Amateur. Last summer, Matt Schneider earned medalist honors at the sectional qualifier following his final season at Bowling Green. At the 2010 Championship, Schneider shot back-to-back rounds of 77 to finish tied for 138th out of 312 entrants.
