Falcons Release 2011 Fall Schedule
August 11, 2011 | Men's Golf
Head coach Garry Winger and the Bowling Green State University men's golf program have released the fall portion of the team's 2011-12 schedule. The schedule takes the team to five tournaments in four states, including the team's annual home tournament, the John Piper Intercollegiate.
The Falcons begin this season in Verona, N.Y. at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate. Bowling Green is competing in the event, hosted by the University of Missouri, for the second consecutive season. The tournament begins on Sunday, September 4th and concludes on Labor Day (Sept. 5).
In 2010, BGSU finished third out of 18 teams with a final score of 903 (308-297-298) and trailed champion Purdue by only six strokes. Three Falcons placed in the top 20, including Wes Gates and Charlie Olson, who each tied for tenth.
Winger said, "This tournament is at a great resort with great golf courses. We played in this event last year and really thought it was a great venue to start the year off. For me personally, the event will be very special, as St. Bonaventure will be there. They are now coached by former Falcon John Powers."
Following their trip to New York, Bowling Green jaunts to Sugar Grove, Ill. for the Northern Intercollegiate. This tourney is hosted by Northern Illinois University and could provide an important glimpse into the spring and the conference championship event.
Winger said, "The addition of the Northern Intercollegiate, which will feature seven of the nine teams in the Mid-American Conference, will be a great test early in the year. Rich Harvest Farms is hosting the tournament, and this will allow us the opportunity to play the course that hosts the 2012 MAC Championships."
One week later, on Sept. 19 and 20, the Falcons host the John Piper Intercollegiate at the Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio. Bowling Green has won the team championship at their home tournament for two consecutive years and three teams in the last six. In each of those six years, the team has finished no worse than third.
Individually, Falcons have won tournament medalist honors three consecutive times. Last year, Drew Preston captured the event with a composite 139 (70-69). Both round scores topped all other golfers in the field.
Bowling Green concludes their fall slate with two tournaments familiar to the team.
First, on Sept. 26-27, the team travels to Louisville, Ky. for the Cardinal Intercollegiate. Last year, the team finished eighth (874) among an outstanding field of 16 teams that included sevenal MAC schools, including tournament champion Miami. Parker Hewit earned his career-best finish (at that time) of 15th place to lead the team. His total (217) eclipsed Drew Preston's by one stroke.
The fall portion of the schedule concludes on October 10th and 11th with another trip to Kentucky. This time, the team will compete at the Bearcat Invitational in Hebron, hosted by the University of Cincinnati.
At the Bearcat tournament in 2010, the Falcons finished sixth (882) among 18 teams. Drew Preston led the team with a final score of 219 and a tie for 12th place, while Wes Gates and Charlie Olson also earned spots in the top 20.
The team's schedule of tournaments for Spring 2012 will be released later this season.
The Bowling Green men's golf team returns all eight members of the 2010-11 squad that set a team record for per-round average and finished third or better in five different tournaments. The team also adds heralded recruit and Wayland, Mass.-native Joe Cooper.
