Falcons Picked to Finish Fourth in MAC

The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team has been picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference race in 2011. The preseason coaches poll, the result of voting by the conference's seven head coaches, was released by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 23).

Akron, the defending national champion, was picked to capture the 2011 MAC title. The Zips received 49 points in the voting, and also garned all seven votes to win the MAC Tournament.
Northern Illinois was picked to finish second with 36 points, followed closely by Western Michigan (35 points). The Falcons received 25 points, while Buffalo received 24 points, Hartwick 14 and Florida Atlantic 13.
Last fall, BG was picked to place sixth, but the Falcons wound up in a tie for third place in the regular-season standings after posting a 3-3-0 conference record. BGSU finished the season with an overall mark of 6-9-3.
The regular season begins on Friday (Aug. 26), as the Falcons host ninth-ranked Michigan at Cochrane Field. Kickoff for that match is set for 6:00 p.m. For BGSU, the MAC opener is Sunday, Oct. 2, as FAU comes to town. The regular season ends on Nov. 5 with a trip to WMU, and the MAC Tournament will be held the following weekend, with the semifinals on Nov. 11 and the championship on Nov. 13. The conference tournament will be held at the home field of the regular-season champion.
