August 24, 2011 | Men's Golf
ERIN, Wis. -- Drew Preston, who begins his final season with the Bowling Green State University men's golf team over Labor Day weekend, completed his second and final round on Wednesday (Aug. 24) at the 111th United States Amateur Championship.
Preston's round was scheduled to begin on Tuesday afternoon, but his tee time at the Erin Hills Golf Course was pushed back due to rain. He teed off at 6:00 p.m. and concluded part of his first nine holes. He resumed play early Wednesday morning and completed the round shortly after noon.
Preston began the second round slowly, posting a total of nine-over-par for the first 12 holes. He then showed strength and perserverance by finishing the round with four pars and two birdies for a total of -2 during his final six holes. One of his birdies came on the par-five, 623-yard seventh hole (he began play on the tenth tee).
The Grand Rapids, Mich. native finished the round with a total of 79 (+7). When paired with his first round score of five-over-par, Preston ended the tournament at +12 and in a tie for 271st place out of 315 entrants.
Preston is a two-time tournament medalist and led BGSU with a 73.27 average for the 2010-11 season. That average represented a 1.87 strokes-per-round improvement over his average from 2009-10.
