SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team ended the first round of the 2011 Northern Intercollegiate in a tie for fourth place and had completed part of their second round when play was called due to darkness thanks to fog that delayed the start of play on Saturday (Sept. 10).
Playing in a deep 16-team field at Rich Harvest Farms, the site of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships, the Falcons shot a 292 in the first round to tie with Tulsa and trail third-place Virginia Tech by three.
Bowling Green is one of seven MAC teams competing in Sugar Grove, Ill. this weekend, and they currently rank second among those teams. Ball State leads the MAC field, in second place overall with a first-round 286.
Parker Hewit led the Falcon effort with several birdies on his way to a first-round 70. He is tied for fifth, four strokes behind the leader and two behind a pair tied for second.
Wes Gates shot a 73 to tie for 25th place, while Chris Melvin played for the first time this season and shot a 74. Drew Preston is tied for 39th after carding a 75 during the first 18 holes, and Charlie Olson finished Bowling Green's effort with a 77.
Teams will finish second round play on Sunday morning (Sept. 11) prior to beginning the third and final round of the tournament.
