SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team finished fifth among seven participating Mid-American Conference teams and 11th overall this weekend at the 2011 Northern Intercollegiate, held at the future site of the 2012 MAC Championships.
Due to a fog delay that delayed the start of play on Saturday (Sept. 10), the Falcons had to split their second round between two days. The team posted a first-round total of 292 to claim fourth place but slipped out of contention thanks to a 314 in the split second round.
After the second round was completed on Sunday (Sept. 11), the 16-team field played the full third round. During the final 18 holes, Bowling Green shot a composite 312 for a final tally of 918. The Falcons finished well ahead of Miami (933) and Toledo (960), and they trailed Eastern Michigan by only three (915).
Central Florida won the tournament after shooting 870 (282-293-295). Ball State (889) was the top-finishing MAC team.
Seniors Drew Preston and Parker Hewit tied for BGSU's top spot by scoring 228 over the weekend's 54 holes. Preston had rounds of 75, 76 and 77. Hewit shot a 70 in the first round and back-to-back 79s to close out the weekend. The pair tied for 32nd overall in a field of 97 golfers.
Wes Gates had two of the Falcons' three best rounds of the weekend en route to a 229 (73-82-74). Chris Melvin (239) and Charlie Olson (240) also competed for Bowling Green.
Bowling Green's next tournament is at home. The Falcons will host the annual John Piper Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 19 and 20. The Orange and Brown have won the team championship of this event twice in a row and three times in six years. In fact, they have not finished worse than third at any time in that span.
Drew Preston will attempt to defend his medalist performance from last year's John Piper Intercollegiate. A BGSU golfer has earned medalist honors in this event three consecutive times.
