BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team seeks to continue championship streaks when they host the 11th annual John Piper Intercollegiate at Stone Ridge Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 19-20).
The Falcons have won two consecutive team championships at their yearly home event. Falcon athletes have also won three consecutive individual championships. Senior Drew Preston is the two-time defending tournament medalist. He shares the tournament record for low 18-hole score with a 65 in 2009. In that 2009 event, he scorched the course to the tune of 132 over the first 36 holes, also a tournament record.
Overall, Bowling Green has won this event four times and has finished third or better for six straight years. The Falcons have had at least one individual in the final top five for the last seven John Piper events, and the team's top golfer has never finished outside of the top seven.
Eight schools will field teams in this year's tournament. Joining the Falcons will be Ohio University from the Mid-American Conference, as well as Cleveland State, Detroit, Indianapolis, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne (IPFW), Loyola (Chicago) and Youngstown State. Both Bowling Green and Indianapolis will have a "B" team, making the field a total of ten teams. Only Detroit and Loyola did not compete in the 2010 John Piper Intercollegiate.
Ohio is the only other team in the field to win a John Piper championship; they won the event in 2008 (876), defeating BGSU by seven strokes.
Preston will defend his title against 55 other players, including all eight of his Falcon teammates. Each of BGSU's returning veterans played in the tournament in 2010. Freshman Joe Cooper will be competing here for the first time.
Teams will convene on Sunday (Sept. 18) for practice rounds. The tournament begins on Monday with 36 holes of continuous play. Teams tee off at 9:00 a.m. with a shotgun start. The final round begins on Tuesday at the same time, also with a shotgun start.
Full results and a complete recap will be distributed after the conclusion of play on each day of the tournament. Results will also be posted to BGSUFalcons.com.
