Men's Golf Begins Season At Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate
September 02, 2011 | Men's Golf
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Head coach Garry Winger begins his 14th season at the helm of the Bowling Green State University men's golf program when he leads his squad to Verona, N.Y. this weekend for the third annual Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.
Fourteen teams will compete over 54 holes on Sunday and Monday, Sept. 4-5. The first two rounds of 18 will take place on Sunday, and the final round occurs on Labor Day. The event will take place on the Kaluhyat course of the Turning Stone Resort. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the course plays to a par of 72 and meanders over 7,105 yards.
The University of Missouri Tigers act as tournament hosts, and they won the inaugural tournament in 2009. Purdue returns to defend its 2010 title, and Bowling Green joins them to play against Baylor, Binghamton, Central Connecticut State, Cleveland State, Connecticut, Delaware, Mount Saint Mary's, St. Peter's, Seton Hall and Texas Christian.
Rounding out the field of 14 is St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies begin play in the 2011-12 season with a new coach -- John Powers, who played for the BGSU golf team from 2006-2010.
In last year's tournament, the Falcons placed third out of 18 teams. The team posted a three-round total of 903 (308-297-298). Wes Gates and Charlie Olson each shot 225 and tied for tenth place, while Parker Hewit tied for 18th with a composite 228. Each of those three returns for this year's event, as does Drew Preston, who tied for 32nd last year.
Overall, BGSU returns all eight players from last year's squad. Falcon individuals had several outstanding finishes last year, including tournament victories by Olson and Preston. The team's roster featured five top-five finishes and 11 top-tens. As a team, BGSU finished in the top three a total of five times in 11 touranments. The Falcons placed in the top half of the field eight times in that same span.
Bowling Green also set a team record for season scoring average with 293.97 in the team's ten tournaments (30 rounds) in which four scores were counted towards the team total (BGSU played one tournament in which five scores counted).
Preston and Hewit, two of the team's three seniors, enter their final Falcon campaign after leading the team in scoring average last year. Preston finished first with a 73.27 average, while Hewit (73.70) is right on his heels. Gates, a junior, recorded a 74.03 average last year.
Joining the eight veterans is Joe Cooper, a freshman from Wayland, Massachusetts. Cooper is a 2009 state high school champion and 2010 state runner-up. He led his high school to its first-ever state team championship, and he was named the Boston Globe's (High School) Golfer of the Year for 2009-10.
Cooper is also a state record-holder after breaking the Massachusetts record for nine hole scoring with a 31 last season.
Cooper, along with Torey Brummett, will join Hewit, Gates, Preston and Olson in New York this weekend.
Bowling Green will announce the lineup for the tournament after practice rounds on Saturday (Sept. 3).
Tee times for both rounds this weekend are 8:00 a.m. Eastern. Sunday's play is continuous; Monday's play begins with a shotgun start.
