Tooke's goal came with just over nine minutes remaining in the second half, and gave the Mastodons just their second win of the year. IPFW (2-12-1) has won two matches in a row after a victory over Nebraska Omaha on Saturday night (Oct. 13).
Junior Anthony Grant scored for the Falcons (5-7-2), giving him three goals in the last two games. Grant leads BGSU with six goals on the season, and is tied for the team lead in points, with 14.
Grant's marker came in the 34th minute of the match. He took a pass and beat a defender, then proceeded to beat IPFW goalkeeper Brandon Cloutier and put the ball into the back of the net.
With just 43 seconds left before halftime, however, the home team got on the board. IPFW's Jose Rodriguez drew a foul in the box, and a penalty kick was awarded. Mitch Falkenstern took that kick, and hit his shot into the upper-left-hand corner of the net, sending the teams into the halftime break in a one-all tie.
The first 35 minutes of the second half saw the Falcons and 'Dons combine for 13 fouls and a pair of yellow cards. What proved to be the winning play came when IPFW's Nate Shipman sent a pass ahead to Tooke on the left side of the pitch. Tooke received the pass and blasted a shot from 30 yards out, finding the far corner of the net.
The 'Dons had a 13-10 advantage in total shot attempts, including an 8-3 margin in shots on goal. Cloutier made two saves on the night, while BGSU junior Michael Wiest had six stops in his complete-match effort.
The Falcons now will prepare for a Mid-American Conference match this weekend. BG will head back out on the road, taking on Northern Illinois University on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20). Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. locally (2:00 p.m. Eastern) at the NIU Soccer & Track and Field Complex in DeKalb, Ill.
