A total of 51 Special Olympics athletes participated, from Wood, Lucas, Sandusky, Henry and Fulton Counties. They were joined by 30 BGSU student-athletes who took part in the three-hour event.
“The BGSU SAAC put together a volleyball training school that was very well organized and well run,” said Randy Barnes, co-coordinator and the director of Special Olympics of NW Ohio and Henry County. “The athletes participated in designated drills and then were able to play several pick-up games with the BGSU athletes. It was a first-time event and was awesome for all involved. We look forward to more interactions of this type with BGSU.”
Men's soccer student-athlete Ryan Comiskey was one of the attendees on Saturday. “The Special Olympics event was a great opportunity to give back to the community,” he said. “It was a learning experience where we learned more from those fantastic people then they learned about volleyball from us. It was a fun experience that taught us all to just live in the moment and enjoy every second.”
“Randy Barnes did a fantastic job of jumping on board with my idea of a forming a relationship with Special Olympics,” said BGSU swimming student-athlete Sarah Reinink, the SAAC president and co-coordinator of the event. “He rallied his athletes, I rallied the BGSU athletes and EVERYONE came together to have a great time! I really enjoyed seeing our BGSU athletes form friendships with athletes just like themselves. My hope is that this event will be a yearly partnership with Special Olympics.”
