April 14, 2012 | Softball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University softball team defeated Central Michigan Saturday afternoon, dropping the Chippewas by a score of 3-2.
Sophomore Katie Yoho led the Falcons offensively, going 1-for-2 with a two-run homer. Freshman Jamie Kertes picked up the win, striking out one while giving up five hits in 4.0 innings of work. Freshman Paris Imholz picked up the save, allowing just four hits and striking out two in the final three innings of the contest.
Bowling Green got on the board early, scoring one run on two hits in the bottom of the opening frame. Proehl singled up the middle, before moving to third base on a Central Michigan error with two outs. The Falcons attempted a double steal, allowing Proehl to steal home, before the Chippewas were able to record the third out of the inning.
Central Michigan responded in the top of the third with a solo home run from Chippewa Molly Coldren, tying the contest 1-1.
The Falcons answered back with a home run of their own, bringing in two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a walk to junior Hannah Fulk, Yoho belted her eighth homerun of the season to left field, giving Bowling Green the 3-1 lead.
The Chippewas almost broke the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring just one run on four hits, leaving the bases loaded to end the inning. Imholz came on in relief with two runners on, and recorded all three outs to get out of the jam.
Imholz was nearly perfect for the remainder of the contest, allowing just two more hits in the final two innings to secure the 3-2 win for Bowling Green.
“That was a fantastic win for us,” said head softball coach Shannon Salsburg. “The great thing is that it took the entire team. We had some big clutch hits, obviously Katie Yoho was able to send one out, and that made a huge difference. We had a great throw by our catcher (Adrienne Dick), and our pitchers (Jamie Kertes and Paris Imholz) were able to cut and paste in some good innings and found ways to get them out. We will take that win every day.”
Bowling Green (25-15, 9-2 MAC) is back in action tomorrow against Central Michigan in the second game of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
