BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team completes their 2011-12 season this weekend with a trip to Sugar Grove, Ill. for the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships. The 72-hole tournament will be played from Friday through Sunday (May 4-6).
The Falcons enter the tournament ranked seventh out of nine teams in scoring average (75.56) but are the only team other than Kent State to win a tournament this season. In fact, BGSU has won twice this season. The team first won in September as they captured the John Piper Intercollegiate. The Falcons won again in April, taking the title at the 2012 Rutherford Intercollegiate.
BGSU is led by seniors Drew Preston and Parker Hewit. Preston has two top-20 finishes this season, including a seventh-place result at the season-opening Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate. His play during that event included an individual round of 69, which ties for the best by a Falcon this year.
Hewit owns one of BGSU's two individual top-five finishes this year -- a fourth-place showing at the Rutherford Intercollegiate. He owns two top-10s and three top-20s in just five spring tournaments and leads the team with a 75.59 average.
Juniors Wes Gates and Charlie Olson will join Hewit and Preston on BGSU's five-man team. Olson is second on the roster with a 75.69 average but leads all Falcons with six top-20 finishes in 10 starts this year. That group of results includes ninth at the John Piper Intercollegiate and tenth at the Bearcat Invitational, where he shot a season-best 218.
Gates is perhaps BGSU's hottest player as the Championships loom. He has finished no worse than 21st in any of his last three events and in four of five events thus far in the spring. Most recently, at the Boilermaker Invitational, he carded an opening-round 69 to match Preston for the best individual round of BGSU's season.
The Falcon team will be completed by Chris Melvin. Melvin shot 232 through the first three rounds of last year's championship tournament and entered the final day tied for 26th. So far this season, Melvin's best finish came at the Rutherford Intercollegiate, where his 231 (76-73-82) earned a tie for 21st.
As a team, the Falcons are seeking to improve upon last year's tournament, where the team finished seventh overall. It was BGSU's best finish since 2007. A fifth-place or better result this year would be the best by any BGSU team since 1995.
Head coach Garry Winger said, "Rich Harvest Farms is a demanding golf course from start to finish, and we will have to pay attention to every little detail. The MAC has some very talented teams, and we look forward to competing against them. Drew Preston and Parker Hewit will be playing in their final MAC Championships, and I know they are excited to get going."
