SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- The Bowling Green State University men's golf team had played approximately one-third of the final round at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships when inclement weather invaded Rich Harvest Farms and caused Sunday's play to be canceled. As a result, the tournament reverted to a 54-hole format.
Results through the end of play on Saturday (May 6) are now final. The BGSU team officially tied for eighth with Akron by shooting a 906 (293-303-310).
Those two teams were only one shot behind seventh-place Northern Illinois and just 12 shots shy of Eastern Michigan in second place.
Kent State won it's fourth consecutive conference championship after scoring 855 this weekend. Their winning margin was 40 shots.
Parker Hewit, Drew Preston and Chris Melvin each tied for 16th after posting cumulative totals of 225. Hewit had individual rounds of 73, 76 and 76. Preston carded back-to-back 74s on Friday and a 77 on Saturday. Melvin also had his best rounds on Friday, as he shot 73 and 74 before finishing with a 78 on Saturday.
Wes Gates ends the tournament with a 237 (77-79-81), while Charlie Olson completed the weekend by shooting a 79 on Saturday for a two-day total of 240 (73-88-79).
Corey Conners of Kent State won individual medalist honors with a seven-under-par 209. Other MAC awards are listed at the bottom of this page.
The Falcons end the 2011-12 season with a 302.21 team average through 32 rounds of play.
Hewit ends his senior season with a 75.53 average. His career totals include a 75.11 average after 132 rounds and 9,915 total shots.
Preston's average as a senior was 76.75, and that results in a career mark of 75.28. He also played 132 rounds and completed 9,937 strokes in his four seasons.
Gates will enter his senior year in 2012-13 after scoring a 76.25 average as a junior. In his three years to date, he has played 101 rounds with 7,638 shots and an average of 75.62.
Olson will also play his final season as a Falcon in 2012-13. During the first two years of his BGSU career, he has averaged 75.94 shots through 62 rounds of play. That total includes an average of 76.09 in 2011-12.
Melvin posted a total of 77.81 strokes per round this season and will begin his junior campaign with a 77.04 per-round career total.
Although he did not play this weekend, it should also be noted that senior Bryan Mitchell ends his tenure as a Falcon player this season. His career totals include a 78.29 average through 55 rounds. As a senior, he played once -- at the John Piper Intercollegiate -- where he scored a 236 (82-78-76) and tied for 38th.
