Kevin Farrell Named Men’s Golf Head Coach
August 22, 2012 | Men's Golf
Bowling Green State University Director of Athletics Greg Christopher has announced that Kevin Farrell is the new head coach of the men's golf program at Bowling Green State University. Farrell spent the past three seasons at Mount St. Mary's, where he was the men's coach for three years and the women's coach for one season.
“Although I am sad to leave the Mount St Mary's golf program and my alma mater behind, I am excited for the opportunity to be at the helm of the BGSU men's golf team,” said Farrell. “I have inherited a very talented group of young men and I believe that some of my approaches to the game of golf is just what they need to take their game to the next level. Everything is in place at BGSU for this program to be successful.”
Farrell was named the 2012 Northeast Conference Coach of the Year after leading Mount St. Mary's to its first men's golf NEC Championship and NCAA Regional appearance. In his three years at the helm of the Mountaineers he has coached one first-team all-conference player and three second-team honorees. Farrell's squads have also excelled in the classroom, producing 10 all-conference academic performers.
“Kevin is a rising star in college golf,” said Christopher. “He has built a successful Division I program at Mount St. Mary's and knows what it takes to mold a championship culture. We look forward to working with Kevin to build the same kind of success here at Bowling Green.”
In 2011 he led the men's golf program to a third-place finish at the Northeast Conference Championships. Up to that point, it was the squad's best finish since the 1998 season. In Farrell's first season, the men finished fourth at the NEC Championships.
“Kevin articulated a clear vision for our golf program,” said Associate A.D. for External Relations Jim Elsasser. “His enthusiasm, energy and true desire to be the Head Coach at BGSU was evident during the entire hiring process. I'm excited Kevin is now a Falcon. ”
Farrell was a standout golfer on the Mountaineers men's golf team from 2004-08. He finished in the Top-10 at the NEC Championships in both his junior and senior seasons to earn spots on the All-NEC team. Farrell is one of five players in team history to finish in the Top-10 at the NEC Championships twice in his career and his three-round score of 220 at the 2008 NEC Championships is still the record for three rounds at the NEC Championships.
Farrell was also the first assistant PGA Golf Professional at Quail Valley Golf Club in Littletown, Pa., from 2008-11 and graduated from Mount St. Mary's in 2008 in business management.
