Gates Wins MAC Player of the Week Honors

Wes Gates, a member of the Bowling Green State University men's golf team, was named Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week, announced by the league office on Wednesday (Sept. 19) afternoon.

Gates earned the award after lapping the entire 63-player field at the John Piper Intercollegiate with a 10-under 206 total score. The senior won the tournament by 12 shots and was the only golfer under-par for the 54-hole event. Overall, his 206 was two shots shy of the BGSU school record.

The Novi, Mich., native opened with a 66 and followed that up with a 69 in round two. In the third round he carded a 71, while battling wind and rain conditions throughout the day. Gates was one of only two golfers to break par on Tuesday afternoon.

Through two tournaments this season Gates is averaging 68.8 and has been under par in five of the six rounds he has competed in. His "worst" round of the season is a 73 in the first round of the Marshall Invitational.
