With the victory, the host Hawks improve to 3-3-2 overall and 1-0-0 in MAC action. The Falcons drop to 3-5-2 and 0-2-0, respectively.
The win was Hartwick's first over the Falcons in the Eric Nichols Era, as the Hawks had not posted a series win since 2008.
Both Hartwick goals came off of shots that were deflected by BGSU defenders, giving goalkeeper Michael Wiest little to no chance to make the save. The Hawks' first goal came on the first shot of the match, as Jhevaughn Beckford took a cross from Chris Walter and fired a shot from 18 yards out. Beckford's offering caught a Falcon defenders foot, and the ball caromed onto the net for a 1-0 HC lead less than three minutes into the match.
The Falcons put three shots on goal in the last seven minutes of the first half, Two, by sophomore Danny Baraldi and senior Zach Lemke, were stopped by HC goalkeeper Mateo Munarriz, while the third, a header by Lemke, was cleared out by a Hawk defender.
BGSU, after taking three corner kicks in the final six minutes of the opening half, had two more corners and outshot the Hawks, 4-0, in the first 15 minutes of the second period, but could not dent the scoreboard. Following a scramble in front of the net in the 53rd minute of play, a header by Falcon freshman Jake Genrich was cleared off of the line by a defender, and the home team stayed in front.
Just 22 seconds after a shot by junior Zach Schewee was blocked, the Hawks scored on another deflected goal against the run of play. This time, it was Cleyon Brown who got the goal. Brown took a pass from the right side of the pitch from Jason Keefe and fired a shot from approximately 25 yards out.
Brown's shot was seemingly headed toward the lower-left-hand corner of the net. As Wiest moved quickly to his right to stop the shot, the ball deflected off of a Falcon player in the box and went into the opposite side of the goal. With just under 27 minutes left in the match, the Hawks had a two-goal lead.
And, Hartwick had several chances to increase that lead in the final 20 minutes, but Wiest was up to the challenge. The Falcon junior turned aside shots from Brown, Tim Crawford and Dean Fowler during that time.
At the other end of the field, however, the Falcons could not cut into the lead. With under eight minutes remaining, Baraldi fired a shot from 10 yards out that was blocked by a defender for yet another 'team save' by the Hawks.
BGSU ended the match with a 16-11 edge in shots, with Lemke firing seven of BG's shot to tie his career high. The fifth-year senior returned to the starting lineup on Friday night after missing Tuesday's 2-1 win over Milwaukee due to injury.
Both BG and Hartwick had seven corner kicks on the night. Munarriz made two saves and was aided immeasurably by his back line, as the Hawks had no fewer than three of the aforementioned 'team saves' in the match. Wiest made four stops in his complete-match effort.
The Falcons are now idle for a week, until a home match vs. Western Michigan University next Friday night (Oct. 5). That match will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
