Senior Wes Gates
New Look Falcons Open Season at Marshall Invitational
September 07, 2012 | Men's Golf
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will open its 2012 season with a trip to Huntington, West Virginia, to compete in the Marshall Invitational on Sept. 10-11. The 54-hole event will be held at the Guyan Golf and Country Club.
The Falcons will be led by first-year head coach Kevin Farrell, who replaces Garry Winger, who accepted a position at Michigan State during the summer. Farrell was named the 2012 Northeast Conference Coach of the Year after leading Mount St. Mary's to its first men's golf NEC Championship and NCAA Regional appearance in school history.
Farrell takes over a roster that features three seniors, one junior, one sophomore and three freshman.
Tops on that list are seniors Charlie Olson and Wes Gates. Olson averaged 76.09 last season, tops on the team. He recorded a season-best 218 (73-73-72) at the Bearcat Invitational to finish 10th and helped the Falcons capture the Rutherford Intercollegiate later in the season with a 228 (78-73-77) to finish 12th.
Gates, a senior from Novi, Mich., has played in every tournament in his BGSU career (101 straight rounds) and averaged 76.25 last season. His best tournament of the year was a fourth-place finish in the John Piper Intercollegiate where he carded a 220 (75-73-72). He also had a 15th place finish at the Boiler Invite where he shot 222 (69-77-76).
Farrell's lineup for the Marshall Invitational will be Olson, Gates, Chris Melvin (77.81 avg.) and a pair of freshmen in Zac Brammer and Holden Pahr.
BGSU will be competing with a stacked field to open the season, including three teams from the Mid-American Conference. A total of 16 teams will be competing: Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Marshall, Miami, Ohio, Ohio State, Richmond, Toledo, Virginia Tech, Western Kentucky, William & Mary, Wright State, Xavier.
Guyan Golf & Country Club
Guyan Golf Course was built in 1922 in the east section of Huntington. The course has been the site of numerous tournaments including U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open Qualifiers and the Marshall University Invitational. The par 71 Guyan has also hosted several West Virginia Opens. The first, in 1936, was won by Sam Snead. Snead also qualified for his first U.S. Open at the course.
Guyan measures 6,523 yards from the championship tees and features medium sized greens with just enough woods to make it interesting. This traditional-style course has tree-lined fairways built on rolling terrain, and water comes into play on one hole. The most difficult hole is #2, a 444-yard, par 4, requiring a long and accurate tee shot up a narrow, tree-lined fairway.
