Zach Lemke Named to Academic All-MAC First Team

Four Falcons earn honorable mention
Lemke, a fifth-year senior, is a native of Beavercreek, Ohio (Beavercreek H.S.). Monday's honor is his second academic accolade over the past few weeks. In late December, he was named to the Academic All-Ohio Team by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association (OCSA).
Four of Lemke's teammates earned honorable mention on the Academic All-MAC Team. That group includes redshirt junior Brandon Silva and true juniors Ryan Comiskey, Matt Griesinger and Michael Wiest.
A tri-captain of the 2012 Falcons, Lemke played in 19 of BGSU's 20 games, starting all 19. He had five points on a goal and three assists.
Lemke played 1754 of the 1874-plus minutes in 2012. He missed one game due to injury, but was on the bench for only 17-plus minutes of the Falcons' other 19 matches.
His lone goal of the season came against Michigan State on Aug. 29 at Cochrane Field. All of Lemke's three assists came on goals scored by junior Anthony Grant. Two of those helpers resulted in game-winning goals by Grant, at Cleveland State (Sept. 14) and Western Michigan (Oct. 5). Lemke also assisted on a Grant goal in a win over Buffalo (Oct. 13).
Lemke finished his career with 15 points on four goals and seven assists. After sitting out the 2008 season as a redshirt, he played in 68 matches, starting 56, over the next four seasons. Lemke had three points in 2010 and seven in '11.
In the classroom, Lemke is a sport management major, and had a 3.66 cumulative grade-point average at the time of nomination (prior to the end of the fall semester).
Comiskey, a native of Grantville, Pa. (Northern Lebanon H.S.), saw action in 19 matches in 2012, making three starts. He had five points on a pair of goals and an assist. Comiskey found the back of the net in BGSU's home wins over Saint Bonaventure (Aug. 25) and Buffalo, and he assisted on the Falcons' first goal in another victory at Cochrane Field, a 3-2 win over Wright State (Oct. 30). Comiskey now has career totals of 15 points on six goals and three assists.
Comiskey, an early childhood education major, had a cumulative GPA of 3.63 at the time of nomination.
Griesinger, who hails from Strongsville, Ohio (Strongsville H.S.), played in 13 matches, making five starts at an outside back position. Griesinger helped the BGSU defense post a total of seven shutouts in the 2012 season. In his career at BG, he has played in a total of 35 matches, making 22 starts.
Griesinger, an adolescent/young adult/secondary education major at BGSU, had a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA at the time of nomination.
Silva, one of the team's tri-captains along with Lemke, was one of just two Falcons to start all 20 matches in 2012. A native of Columbus, Ohio (Worthington Kilbourne H.S.), he played in 1866 of the season's 1874-plus minutes, and registered three points on a goal and an assist. The goal came in the win over SBU, and he had an assist on the game-winning goal vs. UB. In his BGSU career, Silva has played in a total of 55 matches, starting all 55.
Silva, a psychology major at BGSU, had a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA at the time of nomination.
Wiest, a native of Naperville, Ill. (North H.S.), joined Silva in the starting lineup in all 20 matches in 2012. He played every second of every match in goal, and had an 8-9-3 record, an even 100 saves and a goals-against average of 1.10. Wiest's season save total was the highest by a Falcon goalkeeper since 2003, and his total of seven shutouts was the most by a BG 'keeper since 2001. He had a GAA of just 0.83 in MAC matches, and was named to the MAC's All-Tournament Team.
Wiest, a physical education teacher education major, had a 3.43 cumulative GPA at the time of nomination.
The Academic All-MAC Team is the result of voting by the faculty athletics representatives at conference institutions. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 and have participated in 50 percent or more of the team's contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
