Charlie Edwards Named Head Coach at Adrian College
December 10, 2013 | Men's Soccer
"While I am extremely excited to move on to a head coaching role at Adrian College, I am sad to leave BGSU," said Edwards. "It is a very special place that I will always hold very dear to my heart.
I would like to thank Coach Nichols, (BGSU Senior Associate AD/SWA) Lesley Irvine and the entire athletic department for the opportunity to be a part of such an incredible soccer program. Eric works tirelessly to make BGSU men's soccer a great program, and I am certain his work is going to continue to pay off in the future."
Nichols, Edwards and the Falcons finished with an overall record of 6-7-6 and a Mid-American Conference mark of 2-2-2 in 2012. The Falcons scored 25 goals, the team's highest total in a decade, and allowed only 17, the fewest since 2001.
"We are all very excited for and proud of Charlie," said Nichols. "He has been an integral part of our program and will be missed, but the time is right for him to run his own program.
"Congratulations to Adrian College for hiring a great coach and an even better person."
Edwards served as the Falcons' goalkeeping coach, and BGSU had a goals-against average of 0.89, ranking 30th in the nation. Senior Michael Wiest and the BG defense posted eight shutouts, the most by the Falcons since the 1998 season, and Wiest became the first Falcon 'keeper to record at least six shutouts in three-straight seasons since BGSU Hall-of-Famer Scott Vallow in the late 1990s.
In the classroom, the Falcons earned an NSCAA Team Academic Award for the fourth consecutive season after having a team GPA of 3.06 during the 2012-13 academic year. In late November, senior Brandon Silva was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Team.
Nichols, Edwards and the staff have solidified the Falcons' defensive corps, as BGSU's defense has allowed fewer goals than the previous year in every season of the Nichols tenure.
Prior to the 2011 campaign, In fact, BGSU had not blanked as many as seven opponents since 2001. The Falcons kept seven clean sheets in both 2011 and '12, though, before posting eight shutouts in '13.
The 2013 team continued the program's tradition of playing some of the top opponents around. BGSU's schedule included four teams ranked in the top-30 of the RPI
The '12 campaign saw the Falcons post eight wins against another tough schedule. BGSU's 8-9-3 overall mark represented the team's most wins and highest winning percentage since 2003. The Brown and Orange posted two wins and a tie against teams that advanced to the 2012 NCAA Championships.
In 2011, the Brown and Orange went 7-8-3 overall. The seven wins, the program's highest total since the 2003 season, included a season-opening victory over ninth-ranked Michigan before a crowd of over 2,100 at Cochrane Field. The Falcons have played four home matches in front of crowds in excess of 2,000 over the last three years.
Edwards came to BG from the University of Dayton. He spent the 2010 season as a volunteer assistant on the Flyers' staff. He worked primarily with the goalkeepers for head coach Dennis Currier, but also performed a myriad of duties in the office and on the pitch. Edwards helped with administrative duties and travel arrangements, and also helped to plan camps and manage the recruit database.
In the fall of 2010, Dayton's 'keeper, Tyler Picard, was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference Second Team. Picard had eight complete-match shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.79.
Edwards worked at the University of Central Florida prior to heading to Dayton. While at UCF, he worked with the team's five 'keepers, helping to plan and conduct goalkeeping sessions, and performed various administrative duties for the program.
A 2008 graduate of the University of Louisville, Edwards was a two-year starter for the Cardinals. He was a member of the '07 team that advanced to the semifinal round of the Big East Tournament and the second round of the NCAA Championships. A native of Lilburn, Ga., he was a member of the conference's Commissioner's Honor Roll in both 2006 and '07.
In addition to his stints with Dayton and UCF, Edwards also has coaching experience with several teams at the club level. He coached the Oldham County Thoroughbreds in 2008 and 2009, serving as head coach of the U-10 and U-12 boys' teams while also serving as the head goalkeeping coach of the top club-level squad. He also was the head coach of the Metro FC U-15 and U-18 boys' teams.
Edwards graduated from U of L in the spring of 2008 with a bachelor's degree in sport administration. He currently holds a USSF "D" coaching license as well as a level III NSCAA National Goalkeeper Diploma.
"I appreciate all of the people I have met and developed relationships with over the past three years," said Edwards. "This experience has far surpassed my expectations, and for that I am very grateful."
