Three Falcons named National Players of the Week
The national spotlight was on the Bowling Green State University football team Friday night, and the 2013 MAC Champions have not stopped garnering national attention since then. Three Falcons - Matt Johnson, Alex Bayer, and Ronnie Moore - were honored by various publications as National Players of the Week this afternoon.
Redshirt sophomore Matt Johnson was named National Quarterback of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards for his effort in the MAC Championship. The Harrisburg, Pa. native threw for a career-high 393 yards and five touchdowns, as the Falcons flew past No. 14 NIU 47-27 in the MAC Championship game. The five passing touchdowns were a MAC Championship game record. Johnson was also efficient, completing 21-of-27 passes in the contest.
Redshirt senior Alex Bayer was named National Tight End of the Week by the CFPA. Bayer, a native of Pickerington, Ohio, had a career-high seven receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown. Bayer's touchdown reception, which came late in the first half, gave the Falcons a 31-13 lead going into halftime.
True freshman Ronnie Moore, a native of Sanford, Fla. was named National Freshman of the Week by Athlon Sports. The explosive Moore saw most of his action in the first quarter, with all four of his receptions coming in the first 13 minutes. Moore had four catches for 145 yards and a touchdown. Moore had receptions of 61 and 36 yards, with the latter going for his touchdwon. He also rushed one time for 11 yards.
The Falcons, who have won five straight games to improve to 10-3 on the season, are also receiving national recognition in both major voting polls. In the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, the Falcons are ranked 32nd with 10 votes. In the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Falcons received 12 votes, good for a ranking of 32nd as well.
