BGSU Men’s Golf Signs Three for Fall 2014
December 09, 2013 | Men's Golf
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University head men's golf coach Kevin Farrell is pleased to announce the signing of Mitchell Kontak (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee H.S.), Cameron Michalak (Columbus, Ohio/Grove City Christian School) and Ethan DeForest (Cottekill, N.Y./Rondout Valley H.S.)to National Letters of Intent to continue both their academic and athletic careers as Falcons come Fall 2014.
"We are very excited about the three we signed early," commented Coach Farrell. "The three will add a nice mix for us."
Kontak, who is closing out his senior season at Maumee High School, comes to BGSU from Maumee, Ohio. Kontak is a two-time Northern Lakes League Player of the Year and has twice been named to the First-Team All-District and the First-Team All-Northern Lakes League teams. The four-time District qualifier ranks second in points in the Player of the Year category in the 2013 Toledo Junior Golf Association. This year as a senior, he became the only male golfer in Maumee High School history to qualifier for the State Championship Tournament, while he also recorded five tournament wins over seven total events, including medaling at the District Championship event. During his junior year, Kontak posted three tournament wins and was tabbed the Northern Lakes League Player of the Year for the first of two straight years. Kontak, who won at both the S.P. Jermain Match Play and Junior Match Play events, was a Second-Team All-Northern Lakes League selection and a Second-Team All-District honoree as a sophomore. With his win at the S.P. Jermain Match Play event in 2012 he and his father Brian, who is now a professional golfer and won the event back in 1990, became the event's first father-son champions.
"Mitchell is a local guy who dominated the Toledo Junior Golf Association and comes from a BG family," commented Farrell.
Michalak, who comes to BGSU from Grove City Christian School in Grove City, Ohio, is a two-time First-Time All-Ohio selection and has registered a scoring average of 70.9 thus far during his senior season. Michalak earned All-State honors twice, as he posted a third-place finish at the 2013 State Championship Tournament and earned Runner-Up recognition at the 2012 State Tournament event. The AJGA Indiana Runner-Up with a score of -8 under par, has been tabbed a Mid-State League MVP as well as the Ohio Central District MVP during his high school career.
"Cameron is one of, if not, the best players in Columbus," stated Farrell. "He had a phenomenal high school and summer career."
DeForest comes to Bowling Green from Rondout Valley High School in New York. DeForest, who is ranked in the top-500 in the country for the class of 2014, has posted three top-five finishes in American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) events and has set numerous course and tournament records. He set a new Woodstock Open record with both a tournament and course record of a 60, 10 under par, which broke the tournament record of 63 shared by four golfers, including his father John DeForest. DeForest, who has won four straight Mid-Hudson Athletic League Championship Tournament Titles, posted a third-place finish at the 2013 AJGA Ravenwood Junior Championships, a sixth-place finish at the 2013 AJGA CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior Championships, a seventh-place finish at the Lessing's AJGA Classic and an eighth-place finish at the 2013 AJGA Killington Junior Tournament.
"Ethan is a very talented player with a rich golf family background," continued Farrell. "Both his Dad and brother have PGA Tour experience."
The Falcons will tee-off its 2014 Spring schedule on Feb. 10-11, as BGSU will take part in the MAC Match Play hosted by Ball State University at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
