Falcons Advance to MAC Match Play Championship

Could the first day of the Bowling Green State University men's golf spring season get any better? Competing in the Mid-American Conference Match Play Event down in Dade City, Fla., the Falcons went 2-0 on the day to advance to the championship match versus Ball State, who is also serving as the host of the event.

All six Falcons contributed points in the two matches, with Chris Melvin and Charlie Olson each coming away with a 2-0 record on the day.

BGSU, who began the tournament as the No. 6 seed, pulled out an upset over No. 3 seed, arch-rival Toledo in round one. Both teams finished the match with three points, but the Orange and Brown advanced on the tie-breaker, due to finishing with a wider margin of victory when each match was completed. Versus the Rockets, Olson (5 & 4) and Melvin (7 & 5) picked up wins, while newcomers Ryan Triller and Holden Pahr each halved their matches.

In the semi-finals the Falcons would face the Northern Illinois Huskies, who defeated the No. 2 seed Akron Zips in a tie-breaker in the first round. There would be no need of a tie-breaker in round two as the Falcons soared past NIU by a final score of 5-1. Wes Gates (5 & 3), Triller (4 & 3), Joe Cooper (5 & 3), Olson (3 & 2) and Melvin (3 & 1) would all pick up victories.

The Falcons will face the top-seeded Ball State Cardinals tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. BSU is coming off a 4.5-1.5 victory over No. 8 Ohio and defeated No. 4 seed Eastern Michigan by the same score.
