NCAA Announces Hockey Midwest Regional Participants

Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA has announced the 16 teams that will compete for the NCAA Division I Ice Hockey National Championship and four of those teams will open play at the Huntington Center in Toledo for the Midwest Regional, hosted by Bowling Green State University.
The Midwest Regional semifinal games will take place Saturday, March 30 and the winners will play the following day for a trip to the Frozen Four. In the first game Saturday, Notre Dame will face St. Cloud State at 1:30 p.m. Miami (Ohio) will then play Minnesota State at 5 p.m. The winners will play Sunday, March 31 at 4 p.m.
All-session tickets are $75 for three games ($65 for students) and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, www.ticketmaster.com and the Huntington Center and BGSU Ticket Offices. Fans can also charge by phone at 800-745-3000.
Notre Dame was named the No. 1 seed for the Midwest Regional, and will represent the Central Collegiate Hockey Association as the final conference tournament champion. The Fighting Irish defeated Michigan by a score of 3-1 to win the CCHA Tournament title, pushing Notre Dame's overall record to 25-12-3. Notre Dame junior goaltender Steven Summerhays stopped 87-of-92 shots in the CCHA Tournament, while junior T.J. Tynan was named CCHA Tournament MVP after scoring one goal and adding two assists in the CCHA Playoffs. Forward Austin Wuthrich and defenseman Stephen Johns were also named the all-tournament team, while junior forward Anders Lee earned CCHA First Team honors during the regular season.
The No. 7-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies will face Notre Dame after finishing one of the best seasons in program history in 2012-13, claiming a share of the WCHA regular season title for the first time in school history with an 18-9-1 conference record and an overall record of 23-15-1. Senior forward Drew LeBlanc was honored as both the WCHA Player of the Year and the WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year after recording 13 goals and adding 37 assists in 2012-13. LeBlanc, who is also a top-10 finalist for the 2013 Hobey Baker Award, became the first league player to earn both awards in the same season. SCSU junior defenseman Nick Jensen was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year for 2012-13, leading all defensemen in the conference with 19 assists. Jensen ranks eighth among DI defensemen with 28 points and second with 24 assists this season.
Miami will also represent the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in the final year of the conference, with the RedHawks currently holding the No. 3 ranking in the country. Miami claimed the final CCHA regular season title in 2012-13, while also having forwards Riley Barber and Austin Czarnik named to the All-CCHA First Team. The RedHawks were the only team to place more than one player on the 2013 All-CCHA First Team, as both Barber and Czarnik finished the year tied for the league lead in points (38). In addition to being named the CCHA Player of the Year, Czarnik was also named a top-ten finalist for the 2013 Hobey Baker Award. Miami lost to Michigan in their CCHA Semifinal matchup on Saturday, putting the RedHawks overall record at 24-11-5.
Minnesota State, ranked No. 8 in the latest USCHO Poll, will play Miami and enter the week with a 24-13-3 record. The Mavericks fell to the eventual WCHA Champion Wisconsin Badgers in the Final Five Tournament. Freshman netminder Stephon Williams garnered several conference honors, including All-WCHA First Team, WCHA All-Rookie Team, WCHA Rookie of the Year and, by virtue of his league-low goals against average (1.93), WCHA Goaltending Champion. Senior forward Eriah Hayes and sophomore forward Matt Leitner also racked up several conference awards, as both were named to the All-WCHA Third Team. Leitner is tied for tenth overall in the country in points putting up 41 this season to lead Minnesota State. Mike Hastings, who is in his first year as head coach of the Mavericks, was named WCHA Coach of the Year after leading MSU to a school all-time NCAA Division I-high 22 wins.
